J.W. Nelson (johnwnelson) | 22 comments Thanks for that link, Alberto. The blog post was very interesting and inspired me to add "Miami Blues" to my e-book wish-list.

Jay Gertzman | 272 comments I think one of the best passages in Willeford, and noir, is in Woman Chaser: Richard Hudson gets the response he needs in his film about the crash, and arrest of the truck driver, by panning the crowd watching it. The way he got the crowd reactions by those "extras" was by having a burlesque dancer perform in their line of vision. The repsonses of the individuals in the crowd: "lust, greed, indignation, sheer joy..." -- perfect evocation of voyeurism on being a spectator.

Toby (tfitoby) | 510 comments Has anybody seen (or perhaps it has been discussed elsewhere in my prolonged absence) there's a "Hoke" TV series in development? Scott Frank who adapted Out of Sight, Get Shorty and the upcoming A Walk Among The Tombstones is attached to it in some way so it might even be good. Of course whoever they get to play Hoke has large Fred Ward shaped shoes to fill.

I was depressed when I read somewhere (raris-avis Yahoo hardboiled/noir Group?) that the physically-unsuited-for-the-role Paul Giamatti has been tapped to play "Hoke".

Unacceptable!

Giamatti is a fine actor but in what universe is he going to be acceptable to long-time fans of the Willeford series?

Toby (tfitoby) | 510 comments I've only read Miami Blues so far so can't comment too much but he definitely isn't what I had in mind when I thought about Hoke. He has a very particular acting style and looks aside I just can't see him being an honest representation of him.

True facts department: on Giamatti's IMDB profile the following confirmation "In Development" appears:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0316079/?r...

with no additional info.

I thought Giamatti was unrecognizable in a guilty pleasure of an action flick IRONCLAD as evil King John and surprisingly good astride a horse waving a sword at vassals and scowling a lot.
