Sarabeth suggested we start a thread where we talk about our reading habits since we were already kind of doing that in a different one. It all started with our admittance that we smack ourselves in the face with books and ereaders when we fall asleep reading.

What are some of your bookish habits?

1. A big one for me is I can't stop reading in the middle of a chapter unless I absolutely have to.

2. I also like my post its to match the color of the book. And I only use one color post it at a time.

3. I buy purses based on if they can fit a book inside them.

4. I reorganize my bookshelf more times than any sane person should

5. I'll read a book if it has a pretty cover even if people said it's terrible and the synopsis doesn't sound too great (The Selection anyone?) haha

message 2: by Janie (new)

Janie (sjelli11) @Melissa - my husband does #1 too. It drives me nuts. I'll put my book down in the middle of a sentence if I need to. #5 - yes yes! Although I liked The Selection lol

1. I need to read at least a little to fall asleep at night.

2. I hate when ppl talk about ereaders like they are the devil. I love books so much that I will take them any which way I can get them. ALSO I am super anal about the condition of my books and ereaders are much more durable for when I leave my house. Plus if I finish one book, I can start another. I bring my Kindle everywhere because you never know when you'll have 2 minutes to read.

3. I have about 20 bajillion lists pertaining to books. I have my monthly book schedule (and 2014 is already planned too), my books for challenges (which has 3 or 4 lists within it), my series document that has all the series that I'm in the middle of, my 2013 releases that I use to mark if I've gotten them or put them on my wishlist, and a 2014 releases document that I'm adding to.

4. I started taking notes for the books I read because I read too many and I get stuff confused. Also, if it's been a while since I read a book and try to read a follow up, it saves me time for not having to reread.

5. I'm a cover judger. There are so many books on my TBR list that I found because of the covers.

@Janie- How do you do it? I wish I could stop midsentence haha. I liked The Selection too. Mostly because of Prince Maxon. I love making lists too. How many series are you in the middle of? I just made a list recently and mines up to 38. Which is CRAZY!

message 4: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 1 comments I'm in the middle of a bunch of series at the moment too. That's a really good idea writing notes, ill have to try it. Usually I'll go back and read the last couple of pages but I'd love to document what I read!

message 5: by Janie (new)

Janie (sjelli11) @Melissa - I have no clue. I am a spaz anyways, so I think it just works for me LOL. I'm in the middle of 48 series. I need to figure out which ones are completed and finish those first.

@Courtney - I use the little fat notebooks from Mead :) I write the date I read the book when I start taking notes, in hopes that help with finding a specific book when I have too many book note notebooks later :P

I'm in the middle of so many series. Thank goodness for Fictfact keeping me on track. I don't do lists of books, but I really should! I can not stop in the middle of a scene. If there is a scene break in the middle of a chapter I can put it down, if not I have to wait for the next chapter.

1. I totally judge a book by it's cover. Everyone I trust has to shout at me to get me to read a book with a bad cover.

2. I have started to prefer ebooks over physical copies even though this is bibliophile blasphemy. They are simply way more convenient and I adore having every book that I want at my disposal at all times even if I just have my cell on me.

3. I'm pickier about the covers on ebooks than on physical copies. I have no clue why this is, but even if I have to force it to be a certain cover with calibre they all have to have the prettiest cover available.

4. I write my reviews in my notes app on my iphone while I'm reading the book regardless if I'm reading an ebook or physical copy. I can't remember names, or events all that well if I don't take notes. I really need to start doing the post it notes thing.

5. The main thing I'm looking forward to when I move is setting up my library.

message 7: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (shadowrose) 1. Like Melissa I can't stop in the middle of a chapter. I need a clear pick up/end point.

2. I take notes on every book I read because I read too many and I have trouble remember details after a few days. It really helps with reviews as well.

3. I like my bookmarks to 'match' the books I'm reading. Library bookmarks for library books. I have Harry Potter bookmarks specifically for my HP books. Etc.

4. I always finish a book, even if it's the crappiest thing I've ever read.

5. I organize my shelves based on age level. Then from there is hardback to paperback, from tallest to shortest. I'm incredibly anal about this. Though I'm to point where I'm doubling my books on the shelves so I'm having to get creative.

6. This isn't a habit so much as it's just a quirk but someone saying "we'll go to the bookstore", "I'll buy you a book", or "You got a book in the mail" will wake me up immediately. I'm normally sleepy and grumpy for an hour but say those words and I'm ready for anything.

message 8: by Lauren (last edited Aug 02, 2013 02:38PM) (new)

Lauren (roarinlauren) | 1 comments 1. I never buy a purse that can't fit a book and a notebook inside.

2. I'm always reading a couple of books so I can choose what I feel like reading based on my mood. I usually have something dark or crazy going, something light, maybe a re-read of an old favorite. I'm currently reading: Cruddy (dark AND crazy), Neverwhere (light), and On the Jellicoe Road (third re-read).

3. I seem to become completely oblivious to the world around me when I read. On multiple occasions, I've come up from a book only to realize it's 5 AM.

4. I live in Portland, so Powell's is my Mecca. When I make my monthly trip, I give Boyfriend an allotted amount of money I'm allowed to spend. (Sometimes he buys me an extra book when I can't decide, which is why he's Boyfriend.)

5. I have, on occasion, painted my nails to match the cover of a book I'm reading.

message 9: by Janie (new)

Janie (sjelli11) We don't have a bookstore here where I live...but that's kind of a good thing. My husband and both the kids (6 and 5) are bookworms too and when we go home to Knoxville, we almost always end up at McKays (a used bookstore AKA Paradise) and Barnes...if we leave with spending less than $100, it's probably the apocalypse.

I am the same way about finishing a book! I have DNF'd exactly one book, ever.

message 11: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (destinyisntfree) | 161 comments My book habits are probably... Either increadibly mundane or incredibly weird, depending on your perspective.

1. I have to write a review immediately after reading the book, because my ADHD is so bad I will forget too much if I don't. I really should start taking notes.

2. I can stop mid-chapter, but not mid-page, and if the page ends in a middle of a paragraph, I have to at least finish that paragraph.

3. I think I have become an ebook hoarder, which amuses me since I was an ebook holdout and thought for sure I would hate ebooks. But Now I have a nook tablet and a kindle keyboard and one or the other goes everywhere with me.

4. I am insanely unorganized and though I try to do first in first out with review books, it never works out that way.

5. I cannot DNF books. I have tried, but I always have to finish it. Even if it sucks, I have to know how it ends.

6. I, too, am a sucker for a pretty cover, and most of my publisher requests have been because of the cover, before I even read the description. I haven't been disappointed yet, though.

I wish I had more patience with books not to DNF them. I DNF books all the time. Even books that I come back to later and love. I don't have patience to read something I'm bored with and I get bored easily. I have the attention span of a gnat. :D

I have tried, I can think of at least 3 books I wish I could have DNFd but I just can't do it.

message 17: by Sarabeth (new)

Sarabeth (teawithsb) yay for this board!! So reading habits.

1) I read multiple books at one time. Usually they are all completely different, and I pick them up whenever they fit my mood, such as I read As Always, Julia, when I really am in the mood for receiving letters and there are none in my mailbox. ;)

2) I don't know if #1 counts as DNF? Because sometimes I don't pick the books up for a couple of years.

[please excuse any extra letters, I am typing on a terrible keyboard.]

3) I try to read before going to bed; it calms me; however, as seen in previous posts, I tend to fall asleep during my rreading. Current "bedtime story" Sherlock Holmes, The Hound of the Baskervilles.

4) I love the physical books, but convience and protection of my back have made me go over to ebooks. I still try to get physical books when I can.

5) I recently moved and now have A LIBRARY!!! Any suggestions on how to organize it. Most of my books I own are nonfiction (cookbooks, gardening books, etc).

6)Tea is a must, but not always available. In my dream future, I would have tea every time i read. ;)

Sarabeth (teawithsb) sounds good. It is not a huge library, just a room with lots of bookshelves; however, I have already run out of bookshelve space! Have to get more. :)

Has anyone noticed (those who place books on hold) that ALL the books you want to read/ have reserved at the library, become available at the samme time!!?! I have six books I HAVE TO READ by the end of the month (or I could just renew them, but still...). Hehe. I guess I should get to reading. :)

I have two Goodreads shelves for DNF books. "Books I have half read" are books that I have all intention of finishing at some point, someday. And then my "Books I just couldn't finish" is for books that I will never try to pick back up. I don't have many of those, but I have stumbled across some since I started blogging that I just got SO BORED with and had to put down.

AHHH! I have not seen any in the library I work at, but now I will be inspecting every book I pick up! BLAH!

message 28: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (ace_librarian) A couple of my habits (or not habits).

1. I am typically reading one book and listening to one book. Unless something comes in and I HAVE to read it right then! =)

2. 90% of the time, I get a book from the library. If I love it, then I will buy it. I am very picky (and not very picky) about my book buying.

3. I moved into a new place and have a library/office room! I have four book shelves, and it took me at least 12 hours to put all of my books on the shelves because I wanted to be sure I liked my organization system (Which is Dewey for nonfiction, then genre for fiction.)

4. I don't use an e-reader. Nothing against them morally, just personal preference.

5. I bought my new purse a couple of weeks ago because it fit a book in it. =)

6. I have 35+ books checked out from the library at any one time because I like to surround myself with choices (also, it's a comfort thing. I will book binge at the library on days when I feel stressed or ungrounded).

On the same note, I am currently on a trip to the in-laws for 4 days. And I brought no less than 10 books with me. Because I couldn't decide what I wanted and got stressed out thinking about it. haha.

7. If a cover has a pretty tree on it, it's an auto-add to my TBR. Can't really explain why. Just happens. Every. Time.

message 29: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (shadowrose) I just thought of other habits (more like someone pointed them out to me today).

7. When I read more than one book it's always in a different "format". Like a book on my Kindle and a paperbook...but then I take it even further some days by reading a book on the computer, kindle, paper, and audio.

8. The number of free Amazon downloads on my Kindle directly relates to my mood. If I have little to no downloads I'm in a great mood. If there are suddenly 20 new ebooks chances are I'm having a terrible day. It's retail therapy without the spending.

9. Speaking of retail therapy. I will spend hours (literally) putting books in my Amazon cart only to exit without buying anything. I also obsess over free shipping, so I am capable of spending hours swapping books out just to get the free shipping without paying a ton over $25. - The longest I've ever spent doing this is about 3 hours and I came out with $25 even. I will never be able to do that again, lol.

message 30: by Janie (new)

Janie (sjelli11) I have multiple books in different format too ;) I'm reading a Kindle book, hardcover, and paperback right now.

I have a list on Amazon just for Kindle books to watch if they are free or really marked down.

message 31: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (destinyisntfree) | 161 comments I am the same way. I am reading Pivot Point on my Kindle, Underworld in paperback, And Iron King on my nook. The Nook is a Nook Tablet (the first tablet) so that is primarily my nighttime reading.

I'm about a 1/2 and 1/2er with print to ebook purchases. I won't buy an ebook that is more that 6-7 dollars, so if it's that much I but the book!
Some I just want print for the covers...haha

I love Prime not only for the shipping ( I use amazon for so much more than books, so that shipping free such a plus) but also for the instant stream, book borrowing, ect.

message 39: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (destinyisntfree) | 161 comments Yeah I won't pay more than a few dollars for an ebook either, so I am right there with you on that. But I have had such limited space up until very recently that I never really could get too many print books either..

I am on a shared prime account so I dont have access to the streaming or the book borrowing, but the shipping has saved me a ton already.

message 40: by Janie (new)

Janie (sjelli11) I'm cheap - I won't buy an ebook if it's over $2.99 unless it's something I really really really want right that instant. I have a membership with Barnes & Noble, so I get their free express shipping. I order real books from them.

Sarah (sarahmarie902) | 3 comments I'm new to the group, and it was nice to see that I'm not alone in some of my reading habits, here are a few of mine

1- I cannot read more then one book at a time. I know! - How am I supposed to get all 800 book on my TBR list complete if I can't read more then one at a time!!!! But I find I get so confused on which character is for what book ect!

2- I will not buy a purse unless It can fit my Ipad (that I bought just for the purpose of reading!)

3- I am constantly falling asleep reading, and wake up with a complete scare when the Ipad falls into my forehead

4- I am a HUGE bathtub reader! I ruined my first Sony e-reader when the cat jumped on the tub in the middle of the main character seeking out the serial killer in one of those "what is going to happen next moments". After my heart stopped thumping I realized my e-reader was submersed in water! I have not read in the tub since!

5- I cannot stop reading unless the chapter is complete, I cannot stop mid-sentence in a book.

6- I get overwhelmed when It comes to picking my next read, I have so many books that I don't know what to read next, I actually experience anxiety when trying to pick!

7- If I don't enjoy a book, I will stop reading half way through and put it away. I don't want reading to become a chore for me, so If I don't enjoy it, I will usually skip to the last few chapters and see what happens, OR I will read spoilers on goodreads

8- If a book does not get good reviews on goodreads, I will delete it from my Ipad's library.

And last but not least!
9- I find it hard to want to read a book that is also a tv/movie. I don't want to ruin my thoughts on the show/movie buy a different version in a book, I have yet to read "Pretty Little Liars" because I don't want the differences between book/tv show to confuse me for the show! LOL

I know I'm weird LOL... :)

PS- I love this group and all the YOUTUBE videos! :)

I SOOOO need to start doing this. I'm a list maker. I have lists and lists and lists in notebooks all over my house. It's a problem. But I haven't ever made book lists (besides my Goodreads to-read and read). message 46: by Britney (new)

Britney (britneygulbrandsen) I love this idea and I loved reading everyone's habits just now! Here are mine:

1. I absolutely cannot stop reading a book once I start it. I hate it! I keep trying to change this, but I'm too OCD not to finish--even if I absolutely HATE the book!

2. If a TV show or movie is already out based on a book, I won't read the book. There are too many books on my "to-read" to waste time on books that are already movies/shows. That being said, I can read a book BEFORE the show/movie version comes out. For instance, I'm reading The Book Thief now, even though the movie comes out in November. But I won't read Pretty Little Liars or Vampire Diaries because the shows are already out.

3. I have to have something to read with me everywhere I go, even if I know I won't have a chance to read.

I'm sure I'll think of more later...

Janie (sjelli11) I was going to make a Top Ten Tuesday post for next week and realized that I have one particular habit...I forget what books are about, I just know I wanted to read them enough to put them on my TBR.

I find a lot of my TBR books from cover judging and/or title judging. I will read the synopsis and see if it's something that interests me when I add it to my shelf, but with over 2000 on my TBR shelf...I tend to forget what a book is supposed to be about. Example...I can't tell you what Legend, Raven Boys, Birthmarked, Parasite, or These Broken Stars are about...but I know I want to read them and will be doing so in the next month. LOL
