Magdelanye | 2860 comments Must summer reading be somewhat frivolous to match the season? It certainly seems to be easier to relax in the great outdoors, reading until the light fades.

Magdelanye | 2860 comments Managed to get into The City and the City in spite of my dislike of the genre. It took a long time for me to appreciate the delicious absurdity, but hats off to the great CM,he got me hooked and certainly boosted my intersticial awareness.

With great disipline I picked up something I thought might be completely different than JC or CM,my current obsessions. Why did I think that? JM Coetze is as enigmatic and hard hitting with his fantasia realities as BOTH China Miéville andJulio Cortázarand when his fugative "wondered whether there were not forgotten corners and angles and corridors between the fences, land that belonged to no one yet." I felt that moments sense of dislocation,I had only just finishedThe City and the Cityat least I thought I had but here was that intruiging idea again and it seemed I was reading a sequel....

Ellen (elliearcher) | 1373 comments I've finished a couple of excellent reads- The Woman Upstairs by Claire Messud
and Enrique Vila-Matas's Never Any End to Paris, both of which (very different reading experiences) I loved.

For fun, I'm now reading a mystery set in Santa Fe-one of my favorite series, Mo Bowdre, a blind sculptor, and his Hopi girlfriend. The one I'm currently reading is The Knotted Strings (the author of the series is Jake Page)

Work stress is lighter right now, and in 7 days, I get a vacation: can't wait! Lots of reading to do.
