I would love to know the backstory as to why a father would get to such a low level, and do that to his own son? Why choose the church and why does Darius have such a loyalty to Bishop Phillip? Is it extortion, bribery?

The childish response would be "Well why don't you make me?" and if Slate were possessed by Onyx he very well could. The mature response would be "Please tell me why Bishop Phillip has such power over you?, why don't you stand up for yourself."

My loyalty to Phillips is but a product of his kindness and willingness to take me in in exchange for my service. He has given me shelter and sustenance. He is a powerful man in a powerful position and I owe him my loyalty. Remember, Slate is only my protege, not my biological son. Regardless of blood relations I would still have to serve the church first as this is the oath I have taken and given. Low levels are undefinable when the entire township is at stake.
