Punk, Industrial, Garage (I'm making this up as I go along) what's setting your ears alight at the moment?

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm currently in an Otis Redding (bless him) and Nick Cave (Mean, Moody and Magnificent) kind of vibe - but I'm also loving a newish track called Spitfire which has put lines from an old Leslie Howard film about the man who designed the Spitfire to a really groovy tune - check it out on You Tube.

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

Here's the link for Spitfire on You Tube - there's an advert first but you can skip it - give it a try it's fab.

Here's another gorgeous song - and doesn't the bloke look like Johnny Depp?
Barton Hollow by the Civil Wars (the song starts about 30 seconds in)

Ellie (theelliemo) Not quite got Depp's cheekbones

True - but close enough for me!

In memory of the King who passed away 16th August 1977 - here is a link to one of my favourite of his songs (wasn't he gorgeous?)

And because it's Monday tomorrow, here's a cheering dose of Adam and the Ants and Prince Charming

Brill! Adam and the Ant's always make me smile :)

Am loving The Civil Wars - they are awesome! Have never heard of them before, thanks Lee! The Spitfire song is cool too

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

Excellent - glad you like them :0)

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

Re: the Civil Wars - I first saw them, last year, on Later With Jools Holland - they did Barton Hollow and a beautifully different version of Michael Jacksons "Billie Jean". Their 2nd album has either just come out or is just about to.

Yes, I was looking at it on Spotify yesterday - pretty good!
I wanted to play Barton Hollow on my hospital radio show tonight but we didn't have a copy and the internet went down so couldn't search for it :(

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Wow - hospital radio show! Is that a full time thing? Hope the internet's up tomorrow.

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

To celebrate Robert Plant's 64th birthday (64!) - here is a link to my favourite Led Zep song Ramble one
- it always makes me smile

What I want to know is what is so special about his baby's chair that both Golem and the Evil one were after it?

Nope it's just one night a week - theres a few volunteers so different people do different days. I'm still quite new so usually do the requests but me and another newbie got an hour this week to play our own choices!

Today in my little car I have been listening to Frank Turner's Love Ire and Song album so I thought I'd (attempt) to share a couple of my fav tracks:

Been trying to listen to this on my tablet - but it says no - will try again when I can get to a pc (my one at work doesn't do sound!)

Happy Birthday John Lee Hooker!

Here is a wonderful 1964 performance of I'm Leaving on the BBC show the Beat Room. Mr Hooker is amazing, but it's also great fun watching the audience dance- I particularly like the suave looking sugar daddy and the grooving chef.

I liked the dancing chef too - wonder if that was a fashion statement or if he come straight from work?

Love John Lee Hooker as well obvs!

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

Have to put this one on as well. From the same show, it's Tom Jones putting everything he's got into "Chills and Fever". I've never seen such energetic pelvic thrusting - I'm surprised he didn't do himself an injury!!

Finally managed to listen to Frank Turner - I like him a lot - particularly the 2nd song. He's a bit angry though isn't he - I hope he doesn't cause road rage incidents while you're listening to him :0)

lol ;) I'm not really very good at road rage (still too new at driving)

This weekend, my theme is strange, slightly disturbing, but toe-tappingly good

First heres the lovely Bobbie Gentry, with the unique Ballad of Billie Joe

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

And here's The Mercy Seat, written by Nick Cave and performed by Johnny Cash:

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

I love this song - it's so dark and dramatic. And although I adore Nick Cave - Johnny's version is so much better

I'd forgotten I had this CD - this song is great:

Yay! Be careful though - it really gets stuck in your head - I was singing it for nearly a week after!

Cool - I liked the Joni Mitchell song, and Nick Cave and his band were pretty cool (never heard them before)

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

He's mellowed quite a lot over the years - though he's still quite scary :0)

message 36: by Tracey (new)

Tracey | 304 comments Joni Mitchell is one of my favourite artists ever. I love her lyrics, and thinking about it, they're actually very poetic. They give you that lightbulb moment when you realise what a stunning way she manages to describe the everyday. For example describing life as being 'from the forceps to the stone'. I'd recommend Hejira if anyone is interested in hearing her work (I'll try to find someway to send a link).

I managed to see her in the early 80s when she played a couple of concerts at Wembley. Absolutely fantastic.

Tracey | 304 comments Hi Laurel. If you like that kind of music you might like Nickel Creek. They have some fantastic harmonies in their songs (hope this link works)!. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nneEI...

Thanks Tracey - I've never heard of them before but loved that song so going to check out the rest of their stuff now!

message 40: by [deleted user] (new)

Love both of these - in a totally different vein - here is one of Robert Plant's favourite groups - The Incredible String Band - with Waltz of the New Moon- which starts with one of my favourite song lines ever - I hear that the Emperor of China used to wear iron shoes with ease :0)
