Sorry if this comes off as rude, but it seems a bit dishonest to only accept good reviews. It is certainly kind of you to offer up your work for free, but you have to remember also that your reviewers are giving you their time and honest opinion.

Glancing at Yolie's review she only had good things to say. If I'm not mistaken 2 stars is also labeled as "it's okay." Stars mean next to nothing anyway, there are plenty of ridiculous books on this site that have 4+ star ratings. Plenty of amazing ones too that have terrible 1 star reviews.

Anyone on the fence about buying a book will likely disregard stars and instead actually read the reviews. If anything, they'll look at the lowest star reviews to see what they got to watch out for, and if the worst that they see is a complaint about length but good overall - boy you are golden.

The only way to grow as a writer and a professional is to own up to your work and accept both the positive and the negative. You've got to be ready to receive scathing reviews or low star marks. Every great writer has had at least one of their works criticized, and that didn't stop them.

Doesn't change the fact that demanding a positive review, disregarding how the reader actually felt about the work is lowly. It is also incredibly misleading.

Maybe she did break your rule of only giving a positive review, but I feel that having that sort of rule is completely unethical to begin with, as I have previously stated.

A person who steals is a thief no matter the circumstances. Whether he steals from the rich or the poor. The person is guilty of the same crime. It is just as fair to give a negative review on a work to an unknown author just the same as it is to a well known author. If you want to talk about being fair and just, being just comes with being impartial to a person's circumstances.

I can understand being a parent and trying to make it in the world. I'm in that very same position, finishing school and always trying to better myself. The mistake many people make is ever assuming that they don't have anything else to learn.

Just because you have been writing for 20 years does not make you infallible. Every great writer, like every other great artist, grows with time. An artist will continue to improve their work as time goes on. If someone has something to say about your work that you don't like, you take it into consideration (or not, it's your work, you do what you want with it) and move on.

As a relatively unknown author, it is more important for you than King or any other well known author to get completely honest feedback from readers. What you are expecting is not honesty, but hand chosen positive reviews by kind souls to prop up your book with stars that barely even matter. It is dishonest.

What is the point of even asking for reviews if you are so offended by the first person to not give you a 3+ rating? Then assuming that they have impure motives and being overly dramatic? It really reflects badly on character and is what will keep you from improving.

The kind of negative attitude you have displayed is what will alienate readers. I was interested until I read your little tiff over one review. Now, I'm not so sure.

Interesting discussion. I'm going to jump in here and side with Jamie. Stephan, I read both your initial request and the review in question and I also feel that your request was unethical. You are essentially "buying" positive reviews by giving potential reviewers a free copy of your book and telling them to only post positive reviews. If you can't see what's wrong with that, then you are the one that has the problem. It is wrong.

Take a look around this site. Thousands of independent authors are asking for reviews in return for free copies of their books, and the majority of those authors are asking for HONEST reviews. That means they want to reviewer to write what they really feel, not some fake, glowingly positive review.

I, too, have sent out free copies of my book in paperback, paying the postage out of my own pocket (sometimes scraping change out of the couch to do so) and all I have EVER asked is that the reviewer write am honest review. I WANT negative reviews. I WANT to know what I'm not doing right, or what doesn't work, so that I can grow as an artist and an author.

To claim that your negative reviewer has broken some kind of "trust" with you screams that you seem to be askew from reality on some way. Not everyone is going to like your art. Deal with it.
