Tea and Sympathy question

I wonder what the current super-tolerant (not a criticism) climate would think of this play. It is full of ambiguity. Saw the play yesterday in Houston. An audience member made the following comment in talk-back session: "Not one of Tom's fellow students asked him if he was gay." There were assumptions and Tom began to believe that he was based on the allegations and hazing.
