Alana (alanasbooks) | 730 comments It's that time again! For our October selection, we voted for Nonfiction or Biopics. This can be anything made from a memoir, biography, autobiography, historical account, etc. It can involve ancient times or current politics. So anything based on a nonfictional account is up for grabs. I don't have Zeljak's knack for putting up cool pictures, so we'll have to wait for that, but I hereby open this thread for nominations. Perhaps something scary for Halloween?

Ashley (Dina0221) | 28 comments Okay i vote for BIOGRAPHY for LIZ TAYLOR or EDGAR ALLEN POE ( not good with pic inserts sooo i capitalize lol) . Especially since all of these movies are coming up about her life. Both books would be good. Edgar would be great since his writings are compelling , and mystery related (at least to me ) stories, poems.

Alana (alanasbooks) | 730 comments Did you have a specific book in mind, Ashley? I'm sure there are several biographies out there for both, which sounds fun! Just have to narrow it down a bit :)

Ashley (Dina0221) | 28 comments Lol yes that would probably help a lot. Sorry about that . :) I haven't read these two but I am very interested in POE by James Hutchisson and Elizabeth by J.Randy-taraborrelli

Michelle (dmwade_1comcastnet) I’m so glad our category is Nonfiction or Biopic because I just discovered this book and movie this weekend. It’s 12 Years a Slave by Solomon Northup and the movie, starring Brad Pitt comes out Oct 17th.

Michelle (dmwade_1comcastnet) Another nomination would be The Executioner’s Song by Norman Mailer. I’ve been wanting to read that one for awhile.

Interesting stuff already. Ashley's choices might be difficult to pair with the movies, but challenging to read anyway.

Regarding 12 Years a Slave, I am ashamed to say that I've never heard of it, so thanks Michelle for good reading (and watching) suggestion!

My nomination would be Oscar Wilde by Richard Ellmann. Considering how many works we have already read by him, it would be neat to read something more about the author himself ;)

Ashley (Dina0221) | 28 comments I agreee . here are two options to go with the books i nominated. The raven was a movie in 2012 that is about Edgar allen poe last months alive and their is a movie that came out with Helen carter bohem (sp) in regards to liz taylor's life as well as Liz about her entire life in 1995.

Yes, that movie with Helena Bonham Carter might be interesting to watch!

Both recent Poe impersonations I've seen - I liked The Raven (mostly because of elements inspired by his stories) while The Twixt I didn't (something felt disturbingly wrong with the film, can't really explain what) - but both are highly fictionalized. BUT maybe that would make our reading more interesting. To read a real biography and to watch not only those movies but documentaries etc., whatever available to enrich the experience.

Shawna Steve Jobs Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson , Jobs the movie came out in August.

Ashley (Dina0221) | 28 comments I wouldn't mind reading the book (im sure it is an awesome read) about Jobs but something about the movie doesn't intrigue me .

message 12: by Alana (new)

Alana (alanasbooks) | 730 comments I agree with Ashley's sentiments, but that book has been sitting on my list forever and would love to read it, especially while it's still so culturally relevant right now.

Nice, cool suggestions so far! Just to be clear, so far we got:
Poe by James M. Hutchisson Poe Elizabeth by J. Randy Taraborrelli Elizabeth 12 Years a Slave by Solomon Northup 12 Years a Slave Oscar Wilde by Richard Ellmann Oscar Wilde The Executioner's Song by Norman Mailer The Executioner's Song Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson Steve Jobs Capote by Gerald Clarke Capote

The first two do stretch a bit our rules (books that were adapted on screen) but still, there are actually movies or documentaries we may see about people considered in these books. Also, we said one nomination by one person, but well, not many contenders, so no harm in breaking rules so far :)
