Urban Fantasy discussion

What book(s) are you reading right now? Urban Fantasy or other genres... How do you like it so far? What is it about? How did you hear about it? Is it part of a series or a standalone?

Currently, I'm reading two books...

Transfer of Power by Vince Flynn. I haven't actually started it yet, but will be today. A co-worker of mine highly recommended this author and said that she has a "fiction crush" on the lead character, Mitch.

Daring Time by Beth Kery. I have read a lot of positive reviews for this author and decided to give her a try. So far, I really like the story... it is about a cop in present day who inherits a mansion in which he is able to see/interact with a (gorgeous) woman for 1906. He finds out through the police archives that she was murdered and decides to cross through time to save her. I had to put a temporary hold on this book last week when my car was in the shop and I had to ride the bus. The guy that sat next to me one day kept glancing over at the pages and raising his eyebrows. Slightly embarrassing. :)

I'm reading You Suck By Christopher Moore. Its the follow up to Bloodsucking Fiends. So far- HILLARIOUS!

Just started Maledicte.

I'm currently reading Urban Shaman, as a friend has lent me the series promising that I'll love it. I'm half way through so far and I'm enjoying it. I'm also listening to Bitten.

I LOVED You Suck A Love Story! I remember my husband asking me what I was reading.

Currently reading Undead and Unwelcome and Once Dead, Twice Shy. Hope to have the Maryjanice Davidson book finished tonight. This series has REALLY deteriorated!

My copy of Once Dead, Twice Shy just shipped out today.

ReVamped, the second book after Staked. I was reading Once Bitten, Twice Shy but I was at least a hundred pages in and I was bored to tears. I really really wanted to like this series but alas, wasn't to be. Sorry!

[book:The Stand|149267] is on my top 5 list of best reads ever! Uncle Stevie would have to go a pretty long way to top that one!

Cureently reading Ghost Ocean by S.M. Peters I found it at the library and grabbed it for the cover. It's really odd, but in a good way.

I'm learning not to get carried away and buy all the books because it's happened twice to me now that I've gotten a series all at once only to dislike the first one when I just knew I'd love them. Oh well. I did really want to like that series though. Same with Richelle Mead's Succubus series. I'm trying but I had to put it down for awhile.

I loved You Suck better than Bloodsucking Fiends it was a lot funnier.I also enjoyed Dirty Job I couldn't stop laughing. Right now I'm reading Pride by Rachel Vincent the third book in her Shifters series.

Finished Once Dead, Twice Shy last night. It started out kind of slow and once things start getting resolved it's kind of hard to keep track of who's been lying to who about what. The only character I could drum up any real feeling for is the sole human main character. I think I'll probably give the next one a shot just to see where this might be going. Currently reading a mystery. Needed a change after a string of UF/PN.

Yeah, the Jaz Parks books fell sorta flat for me too. I've read two, and Rardin seems unable to get her groove until the middle of the story. Once she gets there, and the action starts, it's not bad. But getting there? Uphill, carrying the kitchen sink. I'm going to give her one more go though, in the hopes that she'll finally start the action earlier on and maintain the momentum.

Do the characters seem flat to anyone else?

I'm starting Skin Trade now, #17 in the Anita Blake series. We'll see how that goes!

Reading Embrace the Night by Karen Chance. I was pretty lukewarm toward Touch the Dark, and found that Claimed by Shadow was a pleasant surprise. I enjoyed it a lot, and so far Embrace the Night has been just as good. Cassie went from a rather bland UF heroine to a really engaging one, and I love me some Pritkin...

I also started Glass Houses tonight for the group read. Too soon to form an opinion, but I'm looking forward to it.

Hmm... I really like the Jaz Parks series, but it's one that I think has improved over the course of the series. I love Jaz, Vayl and Cole, but I do remember that at least the first book was a bit difficult for me to get into. It's probably worth trying one more, Michelle, and then make your verdict on the series.

I love Pritkin! He is one of my favorite fictional characters ever...

I got this recommendation off this group. The "Women of the Otherworld" series by Kelly Armstrong. I'm reading the latest in the series "Living with the Dead." These fall in what I call pulp fantasy. Not deep literature but good fun, easy reads. What I always say "better than TV."

Is Women of the Otherworld more UF, or more PNR?

I just started The Thread that Binds the Bones by Nina Kiriki Hoffman.

I will have to check into the Women of the Otherworld. haven't read that series yet.

The first 2 of the women for the Otherworld straddle the line between UF & PNR. But the rest of the books are far more UF than PNR. I only mention this because I know some people just dont' enjoy PNR at all, and the first 2 are really hard to categorize as one or the other.

I just started Ilona Andrew's Magic series. I thought it was a little hard to get into the first 50 pages of Magic Bites but I'm enjoying it now.

I've decided to take it for granted that the first 50 or 60 pages of most series will be tedious!

I've just started Bone Crossed, the fourth book in the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs.

Just finished My Big Fat Supernatural Wedding and MY Big Fat Supernatural Honeymoon Both were solid 3 stars. I'm glad I read them for the series I already love that have short stories in them, but didn't discover anything new to go hunt down.

Have to wait til next weekend (after payday) to get more BDB books. In the mean time I'll be starting up either Tanya Huff's The Enchantment Emporium or Eileen Wilks's Tempting Danger

Mercy is one of my favorites, too! I've heard mixed reviews about the Alpha and Omega series, though. I want to try them anyway, because I loved all of the Mercy books. Has anyone in this group read them?

So far there is only one Alpha & Omega book, CRY WOLF, and a short story that was in an anthology. I didn't read the short story because generally speaking, I'm not that crazy about werewolf books. I did read CRY WOLF and it was an okay read. Not nearly as good as the Mercy Thompson books, IMHO. But I'll read the next one. If I don't like it any better I'll just stick with the Mercy books.

I read Cry Wolf. It wasn't as good as the Mercy series but it was good enough that I'll read the next one.

I read both the short story & Cry Wolf. And I agree they aren't AS good as the Mercy series, but I enjoyed them a lot and plan to read any future installments.

Gives a lot more info on the Marrok & how his pack works, focusing on Charles as the main character.

Ok, good to know. I guess everyone pretty much agrees. It's a decent series, but they're not as good as the Mercy books.

I didn't realize Cry Wolf was the only book. Thanks Melodie! I don't know where I got the idea that there were several books in the series already!

I just finished reading "The Warded Man" and I LOVED it! The story is from the perspective of three different characters, and it's a fasinating read! I encourage any who like to read about magic to read this book!

I just finished by Alyson Noel. 2nd in her Immortals series that started with . EVERMORE was MUCH better! And I also finished by Ellen Schreiber. I need an adult book now!

I just finished Magic Burns and now I'm going to start Sea Witch by Virginia Kantra. I'm also reading the short stories in Cravings.

Yep, it's YA. EVERMORE was very good, I thought. But Ever just did so many stupid things in BLUE MOON I wanted to slap her. I had to stop and remind myself that she was a teenager and they are prone to doing stupid things. At least I did and the ones I know now sure do!
