October 4th-19thIt's read-a-thon time! And since we all love books and reading challenges, this one is a mix between a regular Read-a-Thon and a Treasure Hunt, Nothing But Reading Challenges style.
◈ Duration:
◈ Teams can choose from two types of events:
Event #1: Reading like a Banshee - a "read-as-much-as-you-can" event
Event #2: Halloween Book Hunt - a mini-challenge event
◈ Book advantage: Each event will have a book advantage awarding, as follows:
1st Place:10 BAP's
2nd Place:8 BAP's
3rd Place:6 BAP's
4th Place:4 BAP's
5th Place:2 BAP's
In case of a tie, the full amount of book points will be granted to the tied teams.
◈ Events are not exclusive. That means teams can choose to do event #1, or event #2 or both.
-Greedy Goblin: Does that mean that I can win 20 BAP's?
-Me:If your team wins 1st place on both events, yes.
-Greedy Goblin:Oh goody. Wait? I can have 2 different places?
-Me:Yes. A team can rank 2nd on event #1 and 3rd on event #2. As a result, the BAP awarded would be 8+6 = 14 BAPs.
-Greedy Goblin:Excellent *evil laugh*
◈ Keep us updated on your progress! Every few hours (as long as it doesn't interfere with your reading), post a status update on how the reading is going. A thread will be provided for this.
◈ The winners of the Read-a-Thon will be announced on October 20th.
Wailing Banshee:Banshees do not read. Banshees wail.-MeWail?
-Wailing Banshee: Yes, wail. We wail till children cry and dogs howl. Till cats scream and people tremble on their sleeping places. Banshees wail and wail and wail till they voices fail and cannot continue wailing.
-Me: OK, banshees wail. And what happens when you stop wailing?
-Wailing Banshee:
*confused look*
We wail some more.
-Me: So, suppose that if instead of wailing, banshees read, what would you do?
-Wailing Banshee: I would read till my eyes hurt and my hands couldn't not turn pages anymore. Then I will grab and eReader till it break. Finally I would listen to audio books till my ears fall off. And then I would read some more. I would read like a banshee.
◈ How to Read Like a Banshee
Step #1: Set a personal goal and let us know about it- this one is just for fun. It wouldn't be a read-a-thon without some goal, right?
Step #2:Find your team's read-a-thon goal - This is as simple as the sum of the book goals from each participant in the read-a-thon.
Step #3:Keep us posted from your process on the provided thread- this one is very important.
Step #4:Read. Read. Read.
Grab your books. Tell the world to stop during 2 weeks. Tell the kids you will be busy reading. Grab your favorite snacks. Find your favorite reading nook and read like a Banshee.
◈ How to keep track** (look this up)
We will provide a thread for this. After you finish the reading for the day. Or you are changing books. Or you need a break. Whatever. Just go to the thread and say which book you are reading and the amount of pages you read from said book.
You can use something on the lines:
MANGO TANGO UPDATE OCT 5:
Karla has read 235 pages in [book] by [author]
Steven has read 400 pages in [book] by [author]
Barb completed [book] by [author], 522 pages.
Reading Pixie:Wait. Wait. Wait. What do you mean? Just write the pages read? Like that?
-Me:See the page you are before starting and the page you are when you stop the reading. Post the difference.
-Reading Pixie:What about word count?
-Me: What about it?
-Reading Pixie:Doesn't it matter?
-Me:Nope. As long as the book matches the TTRC rules, and the pages are read during the read-a-thon, they count.
-Reading Pixie:And if I'm reading a ebook or an audio?
-Me:In that case, only the whole book counts. If you need help with the page numbers ask Countess Paige.
-Reading Pixie: But what if I started it before?
-Me:If it is an ebook or a audio, it doesn't matter. If you prefer to be fair, use the % read against the total.
I don't care which edition it is. Or how you do it. I need a number. Is that number that I'm going to put on a spreadsheet to get your total of pages read.
◈ How to find the winner
First sum the pages read by your team (A). Grab your team's read-a-thon book goal (B)
A/B = read-a-thon ratio.
The event winner will be the team with a bigger read-a-thon ratio.
FAQS1: Need help with the percentage calculation? Vicky from Pewter Blue does it all the time, is like this:

◈ How to find the winner

You are welcome to reserve a spot to do your tracking in this thread. I have not read the whole thing completely yet. I'll set up a separate completed books thread if I need to later. (I usually have to read these things a few times before I fully get them)They haven't put the 2nd one yet so I don't know if that should have a whole separate thread going or not. Might be easier to track them. The 2nd one is some sort of treasure hunt.
eta: they posted the 2nd challenge while I was doing this and I've decided to do a 2nd thread for it.
Hmmmm. Will have to hear more. Is it about reading all you can (so a lot of books for the month) or is it about reading 100% of the goal, even if it is only a few books? I don't plan on many books this month.
The RaT is only from October 4th - October 19th, so it's not the whole month. Each participant picks their own page goal, so if you don't think you are going to read much you can plan your goal accordingly.
Ideally, we would want to be as close to 100% completion as we can get. The winning team will be based on the percentage of pages read out of the team's original goal.
Also not everyone is expected to participate. If those dates are just not going to be good for someone then you can opt not to do the read-a-thon. I'm sure our less active posters will not be doing the read-a-thon. We will not kick you off the team :-)
October 4th-19thGoal- 2000 pages
Books on the reading list-
1. The Road- 287 pages
2. Interview With The Vampire- 342 pages
3.
4. Carrie- 253 pages
5. Black House- 688 pages
6. The Kitchen House- 369 pages
7. Volcano Watch- 342 pages
8. The Secret of the Forgotten City- 180 pages
9.
Completed pages so far: 592 pages
I did some math to help people out with goals for the read-a-thon. I won't bore everyone with exactly how I did it, but I took the average pages/book from our teams list of books read and used that to figure out approximately how many pages you should be reading in a 2 week period to be "on track." Spreadsheet Link
Because the points are calculated based on pages read / book goal, a person with a higher goal will need to read a higher number of pages for to get the same number of points as someone with a lower goal.
In other words - if someone with a 50 book goal reads 1,000 pages they will get us 2,000 points. If someone with a 100 book goal reads 1,000 pages they will only get us 1,000 points and would need to read 2,000 pages to get the same 2,000 points as the first player.
Like the September challenge, even though individual goals are being used to calculate percentages, the final numbers will be team based. So, if our 50-book player can read another 500 pages to make up for the 100-book reader only reading 1,000 pages.
I'm still debating if I want to be in for the RAT or not. I'm working on a few big house projects and a costume for a convention I'm attending in early November, so I'm not sure if I can commit to a big reading push during the dates of the challenge.
So, it would be better for our lower goal people to read as much as they can, versus me reading and not getting as much for it? I know I definitely am not up for 17 or so books in Oct unfortunately. We're having so much fun, and it's hard for me to take time to read right now. I can do it, I just can't say that it will be the most amount of pages for the most points this time for me.So, let me know if it's best if I just stay out of this one, I can just read for the group in general if it's best if my large goal isn't added.
I have a high goal like Brooke. I've also been wondering if it's better for me to sit out the RAT. I had a bad month in September. I am planning on reading more in October though.
Wondering if I can average 200 pages a day and hit 3,000. For my time zone I basically have 15 full days. Not counting the 19th as it ends 11 am for me.
Yeah, for me it ends at 10 am, which works! And I think I can average 133 pages a day :) Hopefully I'll beat my goal!!
According to the spread sheet I would be around 900 pages and I put in for 2000 - so I hope that helps.
Well I will set my goal at 3,000 (25 more than the spreadsheet but I like even numbers) and hope real life doesn't get in the way. Mom is back to work part time after her surgeries which frees up a lot of my time. Mostly after work stuff to help her out. Plus I need to clean my basement out for the remodel so lots of audiobook time there unless the kid is helping me. But I think I will do it myself so she can't talk me into keeping stuff.
OK here's who I have so far for participants. Please let me know if I have anything wrong. Read-a-thon
Sarah: 2,000 pages
Marianne: 2,000 pages
Riya: 2,000
Brooke: 2,000
Vicki: undecided
Mary: 3,000 (yikes!)
Imke: 2,000
Book Hunt participants (listing themes people have mentioned to see where we stand)
Player Themes
Marianne 1,2,5,6,8,9,10
Brooke: 4,7
Mary: 1,2,4,5,6,7,8,9,10
Andrea: 2,4,7,8,9,10
Sarah: 1,2,5,6,8,10
Imke: TBD
Riya:
Vicki
So in looking at this # 3 is definitely out. Looks to me like 2,6,8,9,10 are the most popular. Then maybe 4 or 7 spell out. I think we should do at least 1 of the spell out ones so we can work some non-paranormal/fantasy books in if needed. Also books that fit the themes can be worked into a spell out.
OK. Going to mull over which 5 to choose and how to order them. I will not submit anything without proposing it to the team first.
Okay, I'm in for the RaT portion but not the hunt. So, if I set a goal of 900 pages for funsies, but I read 1000 pages, it's actually just my pages read that counts, not what my goal was or how much over my goal I went, right?
With that asked, I'm going to set a personal goal of 900 but am hoping to read more.
You are correct Teresa. I think the goal if just to have a basis to go buy. It should be somewhat inline with your book goal.
I went by that spreadsheet that Vicky linked up above. My goal on that was something like 893 so I rounded up, even though I doubt I'll read an even 900 pages. I'm sure I'll go over by some odd number, hopefully a lot of them but we'll see.I'm really annoyed right now. My son got a 0 on a math paper that he should have gotten a 100 on and now I need to send an email to his math teacher for an explanation. I'm so darn sick of the lack of communication with middle school teachers compared to elementary.
Well, the teacher responded tonight and it was a very satisfactory response so I feel much better. I hope I didn't come off snarly at all. I was pretty upset when I wrote it but I tried to remain calm and diplomatic and friendly.I'm hoping that in high school the boy will be better at communicating with me...hahahahaha. I know, what a laugh.
I'm in for the RaT only this month. I'm setting my goal for 2000 pages. I'm reserving this spot for updates on pages read.Imke's RaT goal: 2000 pages.

Actually, we can use any books, that fit our themes, for the Book Hunt part that are finished for Event 1 even for players who only signed up for the pages part. But not the opposite. If someone is only signed up for the book hunt part then we can't count their pages. So if Teresa or Imke happen to finish a book that works for one of our themes. We can use it.
Oh, that sounds great! I can try to post a little bit about each book I finish, to help you decide if they fit any of the tasks.
Making a note of my pages-read progress here. Current pages read: 19201
Total pages read goal: 900
Grand total of final pages read should be: 20101 or more
Hm...I just thought of something. I've already started a book that I plan to finish soon. I can't remember the rule on starting books for Task #1 before the RaT starts. I know I'm less than halfway through the book so am I just going to count the remaining pages I have to read, or do I count the full book once I complete it?I'm wondering if my numbers in the post above are rendered useless because I don't know if GR tracks only 'pages read' from books read in full or if they go by whatever my latest 'pages read of current read' is.
They aren't looking at our goodreads page counts this time. You can use any pages read during the read-a-thon. So if you started the book before the RAT start time then just count the pages read during the challenge.
I broke down and created a separate updating thread. I just don't want to miss or duplicate pages in my updates to the mods in the other threads. Read-A-Thon Updating
I modified my page tracking spreadsheet. It's here if anyone wants to check the team progress: pewter blue page tracking
Vicky I put 100 pages in for your goal just to have a # in there.
I'll be putting my info into the "update" thread after I post the info here. This is just for myself to keep track, before I make my "final" submissions each day.Finished W is for Wasted, so from page 202 to page 486 = 284 pages complete, so far.
I started reading Coraline from page 20 today. I'm up to page 72, so I've read a total of 52 pages today. Will update the 'update' thread about this.
My goal for today is to finish The Road for Task 2- its less than 300 pages and its a quickie read so it shouldn't take long! :)
I finished up the Unseen this morning.Starting on The Dark Highlander on audio. My next print read will probably be The Ghost & The Dead Deb.
This is not a "final update" for today, this is just a "where I am, so far". I may read more before the day is done:19 pages of The Camel Club #1 read
141 pages of Mythos Academy #1 read
Once again, I feel like I read all day and it only added up to 156 pages. I'll start a new audiobook tonight while I work on my tapestry and try to get a full disc in before bed.And my bosses (my mother and her business partner) decided that someone should be at the office to answer the phone on Monday. So I have to work a half day. I am working the morning and Mom is taking the afternoon. I was bummed at first. But I'll be there all by myself which means I can listen to an audiobook unless the phone rings a lot. And I'll get paid for the full day and double time for the hours I actually work. So not going to complain.
