It's time for

Start: October 4th PDT 8:00 AM (BST 4PM) - countdown
End: October 19th PDT 8:00 AM (BST 4 PM)

It's read-a-thon time! And since we all love books and reading challenges, this one is a mix between a regular Read-a-Thon and a Treasure Hunt, Nothing But Reading Challenges style.

◈ Teams can choose from two types of events:
Event #1: Reading like a Banshee - a "read-as-much-as-you-can" event
Event #2: Halloween Book Hunt - a mini-challenge event

◈ Book advantage: Each event will have a book advantage awarding, as follows:
1st Place:10 BAPs
2nd Place:8 BAPs
3rd Place:6 BAPs
4th Place:4 BAPs
5th Place:2 BAPs

In case of a tie, the full amount of book points will be granted to the tied teams.
Each team participating in the read-a-thon will receive 5 BAPs - and yes, it's cummulative

◈ Events are not exclusive. That means teams can choose to do event #1, or event #2 or both.

◈ Keep us updated on your progress! Every few hours (as long as it doesn't interfere with your reading), post a status update on how the reading is going. A thread will be provided for this.

◈ The winners of the Read-a-Thon will be announced on October 20th

Event #1: Reading like a Banshee

How to Read Like a Banshee?
Step #1: Set a personal goal and let us know about it- this one is just for fun. It wouldn't be a read-a-thon without some goal, right?

Step #2:Find your team's read-a-thon goal - This is as simple as the sum of the book goals from each participant in the read-a-thon.

Step #3:Keep us posted from your process on the provided thread- this one is very important.

Step #4:Read. Read. Read.
Grab your books. Tell the world to stop during 2 weeks. Tell the kids you will be busy reading. Grab your favorite snacks. Find your favorite reading nook and read like a Banshee.

How to keep track?
We will provide a thread for this. After you finish the reading for the day. Or you are changing books. Or you need a break. Whatever. Just go to the thread and say which book you are reading and the amount of pages you read from said book.
For ebooks and audiobooks you can use percentages. BUt they need to have at least one edition with page numbers on GR. If not, ask Countess Paige for help.

How to find the winner?
First sum the pages read by your team (A). Grab your team's Tower Team Goal (B)
A/B = read-a-thon ratio.

Example:
Team Moonstoon only has 3 members participating on the read-a-thon.
book goals are:
Member book goal
Chris 100
Rebecca 150
Vi 213

Total book goal:100+150+213 = 463

Now add the number of pages read during the RaT
Member pages read
Chris 1000
Rebecca 2000
Vi 3000

Total of pages read = 1000+2000+3000 = 6000

Moonstoon Points for the Reading Like a Banshee option:
(6000/463)*100 = 1295,896

The event winner will be the team with a bigger read-a-thon ratio.

Event #2: Halloween Book Hunt

How to Beat the Pirate Ghost and Catch the Treasure?
For this event, each team will have to complete 5 tasks or steps. Each task has to be posted on the correct order. Plus, they are cumulative - which means read one book for task #1, two books for task #2 and so on.

Step #1: Choose the themes from the options below, and decide which one you will do for each task. You can't choose the same theme more than once. Don't forget you have to post them in the correct order.
For example, if you choose Theme #7 for Task 1, Theme #4 for Task 2, and Theme #10 for Task 3, you must post them in that order: 7, 4, 10.

Step #2: Grab the Clues. For each completed task, we're going to give you a clue. After you collect all clues, you can start working on your final task. Without this one you can't compete for the final BAPs, so plan carefully.
Book Hunt Themes
Theme #1:Classic Horror

The Mists of Avalon (Avalon, #1) by Marion Zimmer BradleyBeltane by Erin O'RiordanSamhain by Cassandre F. Amaranthe

(**)For this theme, it all depends on the reader's interpretation - it can be book concept, settings, cover or title.

Example:
Cadet Blue decides that the order for the five tasks will be:
◈step #1 - Theme #10:Special Abilities
read one book where a character has a special ability
◈step #2 - Theme #2:Masters of Horror and Fantastic
read two books written by a master of horror or fantastic
◈step #3 - Theme #6:Hallow Places
read three books that have a scary place
◈step #4 - Theme #8:Supernatural Creatures
read four books with a supernatural being
◈step #5 - Theme #7:Halloween Party - spell-it-out choice: Zombie Walk
read 5 books from the spell-it-out option

Getting the clues:
Since Cadet Blue chose a 4 step hunt, for each finished step, they get a clue - for example:
◈Clue #1: It can be one of three
◈Clue #2: Is a member's choice
◈Clue #3: It generates great discussions
◈Clue #4: Is a monthly occurrence
◈Clue #5: Participation is not mandatory

Treasure: For your final task, read a current or past BOM.
Note:The clues and treasure displayed are just an example. Final task is still to uncover

Clues and Final Task
To keep things even - and to avoid the Pirate's Wrath - we're going to use a point system.

For each task marked as complete, the team will be awarded some points, according with the posting order as follows:
Tasks 1 to 5: 1 BAP per task completed
Final task: 5 BAPs

As soon as a task is marked as completed by the first team, the correspondent clue will be posted on the thread, so every team member can access it.

Final task has no reading included, and will by posted on the 14th or as soon as ALL teams complete all tasks from 1 to 5.

Changes to events, themes and participants are allowed till October 14th.

Turtlecollector Dennis Ezinwanyi~For you, Agron wrote: "Can I book be in multiple categories? I ask because of your #2"

No, I was listing books then which categories it would fit if it would fit in more than one. It is easier for me this way when I am at work.

We are still missing Melissa's books so things will change.
At the moment TC as fastest of us has first first two categories and most books. Me as slowest, am starting 'last' with third one and I'm backup in case one of you can't finish third one (or later) in time.

Since speed is important here it would be great if we stick to the plan.

Every time we finish a step (category) we get points. And points are decreasing with each team posting (that's why we need speed ☺). Team with most points at the end wins.

Ezi Chinny (ezinwanyi) I'm listening to Darkness Rises (Immortal Guardians, #4) by Dianne Duvall on release day. It's vamps, so you should sub it for Shadowed (step 3)

Also, I removed Allegiant & Horde due to their late publication dates

Done :P

Turtlecollector Dennis I am going to read my books in that order. I might start Pride and Prejudice and Zombies a little early so that it is finished in the right time frame. Sonia said for part 2 only finished date matters.

message 24: by ❀Tea❀ (new)

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 384 comments I would also like to say this plan is not fixed in stone. :P I went by how I could fit most books in.
After Melissa gives us her titles, who knows how it'll end up.

If you see a way to sort them differently, you're welcome. You now what you want to read and when. I just assumed that your first book in each category is your first choice and tried to use them. :P

Turtlecollector Dennis That is fine with me. I am planning to read all the books in post 16 by the 19th so you can switch them around if you want to. I just need 24 hr? notice if I need to have a book moved up in the task list. I did not have a specific order of reading them in mind except for reading Kristen Painter series in order. I think I might even sneak another book or two in there, so you can tell me if you think I should try to find something specific to this challenge.

I also think it is good that you are making me read my scary ones first so I can't put them off. Sometimes I am a good procrastinator and this will force me to get them done quickly.

I only put them first because those were only two categories with 'limited' book choices. :P
If Melissa also wants to read scary book, they can be moved later.

The only thing I think it should stay is that you are doing first step (and maybe second) since you're fastest reader in our group. That would give rest of us chance to catch up with later steps. :P

Ezi Chinny (ezinwanyi) Question: for Face your fears, would spousal abuse be acceptable? It's not Halloween-ish, but it's a fear.
Where the Allegheny Meets the Monongahela by Felicia Watson

message 28: by Turtlecollector Dennis (last edited Sep 26, 2013 10:46AM) (new)

Turtlecollector Dennis Fears don't have to be Halloween related. It even lists planes in the rules. So if it is a fear for you it counts. I have a fear of blood. I can't stand to see someone and/or myself bleeding, it always starts to panic me.

Turtlecollector Dennis I am also going to read The Restorer which should fit in theme 6 hallow places. Can you make step 1 whichever book I finish first with this and the one already there?

What about Alice?

Let's do this way: What books are you reading first two weeks? :P
And remember challenge is staring on Friday 4th. Not on 1st.

Turtlecollector Dennis For part 2 we can start a book before the 4th as long as we finish it after. I wasn't thinking we needed to change the second step unless Ezi wasn't going to read Alice so early in the month. Only the first step and my book might need changed.

Anyway, I will be reading The Restorer, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and Kristen Painter books in first week of October to get them out of the way. See my preliminary post above in my reserved posts and then tell me if I need to switch some around.

I know only finished books count. But if Ezi starts book on Monday, she'll be probably done with it by Friday. :P
As for changing steps, Where the Allegheny Meets the Monongahela is also fear book.
I'll wait for Ezi's plan (☺) before changing anything.
And Melissa still needs to post her books.

In worst case scenario, I can put Where the Allegheny... under spell-out (characters are Logan & Nick :P)

I AM FINISHED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL Here is the best I could do.

Turtlecollector Dennis Melissa, Tea was trying to sort out a plan for the second part because speed of getting done is part of the challenge. The first 5 teams to post each task get extra points.

I think if you read the first two first toward the beginning of the challenge, depending on who finishes their books first, we can put them into the themes for tasks 1-3 or use them in the spell-outs for tasks 4-5(like we can for any book you read). You can start a book before Oct 4th but it needs to be finished on or after Oct 4th to count. I am planning to start Pride and Prejudice and Zombies a day or two early because I think it will take me longer to read and then I will finish it in the first day or two of the challenge.

The books can be read in any order, it is just us captains that have to posts the tasks in the right order. So the team could finish task 3 before task 2, but we won't post it until task 2 has been finished and posted.

So, even if your books didn't have a Halloween theme, or you weren't sure ahead of time what you were reading, we could still use them in the spell out part since only the word we are spelling has to be Halloween-themed. Does that make sense?

message 42: by ❀Tea❀ (new)

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 384 comments Melissa (ladybug) wrote: "Do we need to specify what we will read before hand? I am usually a read as I feel like it."

I know Melissa, I'm mood reader too. Every time I plan something to read it ends up as struggle because I wasn't in the mood for that.
The only planned book for me here is
The Cuckoo's Calling because there is BR. Rest of them are sitting on my reader waiting for 'right' time. I just went through books and found what would fit.

I was trying to make some kind of plan so we know who's covering what. That way we won't end up all reading S-book at the same time while nobody is reading first category.
Of course, there is always possibility to shuffle things around.
I've put TC first because she's fastest reader between us, but if somebody else finishes book that can be used before her, we'll go with that one.

As TC said, for this part of the game speed is important if we want to win points. If not, then we are playing it only for fun. ☺
