Yes, Degree Coffee is a whimsical, light read on the city. And have a cup of filter coffee to go with it!
If you're looking for fiction I suggest Chennaivasi by T.S Tirumurti, its a fun, time pass read with nice descriptions of our city with all its "quirks" :D
I would like to suggest my book - The Perfect Groom. It is set in Mylapore, the heart of old madras.http://www.amazon.in/The-Perfect-Groo...

To Deepti: Two states by Chetan Bhagat is also set up in Chennai. Its a light read. But I would strongly suggest Classics: R.K. Narayan's books (Swami and Friends, Bachelor of Arts, Painter of signs, Malgudi Days) if you want to know on the whole about Tamizh culture.
Thank you Sarita and Archana. It is available in Amazon now - http://www.amazon.com/The-Perfect-Gro...
I know this is a little late but the best book I have read on Chennai is 'The Purple Line' by Priyamvada Purushotham. It's set in the 2000s. It's contemporary and nostalgic and makes you fall in love with Chennai over and over and over again.
Not a book, but you can find some gems if you read this quirky periodical from cover to cover. The archives are a perennial favorite with old timers. Happy browsing.http://www.madrasmusings.com
Tip : MMM's fortnightly column may be the quirky light read about Chennai that you are looking for !

I moved to Chennai recently and I want to read a good book on the city. Not so much history as a light-hearted description of the city's quirks and mannerisms. Something that helps you relate with the people and places better.
Somewhat a fun read. Recommendations please...
