Deepti Bhaskaran | 2 comments Hi,

I moved to Chennai recently and I want to read a good book on the city. Not so much history as a light-hearted description of the city's quirks and mannerisms. Something that helps you relate with the people and places better.
Somewhat a fun read. Recommendations please...

Karthik Sundaram | 5 comments Degree coffee by the yard by Nirmala Lakshman will be my recommendation...

Deepti Bhaskaran | 2 comments What's amusing is that most books on Chennai have coffee in their title :-)

message 4: by Karthik (new)

Karthik Sundaram | 5 comments Yes, coffee is an indispensable part of the city's identity

Usha Narayanan (goodreadscomwriterusha) | 3 comments Yes, Degree Coffee is a whimsical, light read on the city. And have a cup of filter coffee to go with it!

Mylapore is indeed the heart of Chennai :) I cannot wait to read your book now :)

Archana Chari (archanachari) | 7 comments To Deepti: Two states by Chetan Bhagat is also set up in Chennai. Its a light read. But I would strongly suggest Classics: R.K. Narayan's books (Swami and Friends, Bachelor of Arts, Painter of signs, Malgudi Days) if you want to know on the whole about Tamizh culture.

Hamsini | 1 comments I know this is a little late but the best book I have read on Chennai is 'The Purple Line' by Priyamvada Purushotham. It's set in the 2000s. It's contemporary and nostalgic and makes you fall in love with Chennai over and over and over again.

message 14: by Saritha (new)

Saritha I've never heard of it! Will look out for it, Hamsini. Thanks for this.
