Purr More (m222) Anyone know how to change a cover *after* you already uploaded one? I uploaded one to fix a blank cover but I clicked the wrong file by mistake and now the "Add a Cover" link is gone.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) I wish I knew - I'd like to replace one that is heavily pixelated and unreadable with a clean scan.

Shomeret | 13 comments My only suggestion is to remove the book from your shelf and re-enter it. You should then be able to re-upload the cover. It worked for me today.

Oh, I really, really hope not. If even newbie members can overwrite existing covers that will drive me nuts.

My bookshelves changing *shudders* which covers are shelved...indie authors changing my bookshelf contents every blasted time they upload a new cover on amazon because it has to be the cover's fault book is overlooked ...

Sorry, if it happens, I do realize my having my bookshelves vandalized with cover changes is less troublesome than actually having the shelf deleted for "context."

Josie | 2 comments Relating to this, is there any way to switch editions, apart from deleting the book from your shelves and re-adding?

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 445 comments I could use help with editions as well, short of going out to a bookseller site and using their product pages to locate an edition, I cannot figure out editions on booklikes.

My first impression is that if you review one edition, the review does not show on all editions. No clue what their policy is on adding same review to multiple editions.

I had that problem this weekend (Saturday evening!) and I e-mailed their support, got an answer within a few minutes and they had changed the cover for me :) I don't think users can change covers for the time being.

Hopefully never. It's one thing to add an additional book cover edition and a whole other can of worms to overwrite a bookcover other booklikers deliberately shelved.

Thanks! I will send them a note and see if they can remove the cover so I can add the right one. I wonder though... if I add or change a cover on my shelf does it change for everybody or just on my shelf?

Actually, if you go to your import page you can change the covers on those but only if it comes up in the search. That was the problem I had because it is a pre-release book so there wasn't anything on Amazon to pull.

Linda (un)Conventional Bookworms (linda_unconventional_bookworms) @Debbie, I see what you mean, you want to have a certain edition's cover on your shelf so it matches the actual book you own. I'm the same way. The book I first added a cover to was a very newly released book, and I had participated in the cover reveal. However, I clicked on the wrong image and uploaded the thumbnail - it looked pretty bad.

And I think we can only add a cover if there's the green one showing - not if there's already a cover, even if we would like another edition.

Debbie, I wasn't changing a cover that was already on the database. I had manually entered a record for an edition that wasn't on the Booklikes database. The book had been sent to me by the author for review. I knew it was on Smashwords, but I tried Amazon because I thought that surely the Kindle edition could be found there. It wasn't there at all. There was a book on Amazon in Kindle format by the same author with a similar title and I uploaded it in error. I deleted my manually entered record when I saw I couldn't replace the cover. Then I re-entered the edition and replaced the cover with the correct one from Smashwords which is the publisher of this particular book. I would never change a cover that other people had shelved. Give me some credit. I'm a Goodreads librarian.

I fixed an error, so that now when other people shelve this edition they will have the correct cover rather than the cover for a completely different book.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 445 comments That's what I thought since the only way I saw to upload a cover image was if the green-no-cover thing showed and you clicked to "add" a cover. Then came posts saying you could re-add or some such and I misread thinking some posts were saying it would be a good feature to put in place.

I've not been on booklikes long enough to know if they have personal book pages plus "works" pages in the way Library Thing does things.

I'm just positive that on goodreads that if you change anything on an edition, it changes on everyone's shelves who catalogued that edition.

And as a goodreads librarian I'm sure you've encountered strong reactions from amazon authors who feel that because they have a product page on amazon that they can update at will that by golly they should be able to alter the book data pages here and any member book catalogs be damned because it is their book--and now that amazon owns gr anyone arguing with them will suffer when amazon lowers the boom and shows goodreads how it's one -- not a part of being a librarian that I miss.

carol. | 86 comments Oh, I'm so glad someone posted this. I can't figure a way around, so I did the delete route. In a couple of cases, they were ebooks--I honestly don't know if they had covers or not--self-published authors. But one was an ebook edition of a Lee Child book (which I read in hardcover), so I don't know why it did that. I ended up copying the review, deleting the book from my shelves, finding the right edition and pasting the review. Don't want to do that too often!

Optimist ♰King's Wench♰ I'm still really having a hard time with this cover thing. Last night I looked up Bran's Story & it had a Cara McKenna cover so I delete the cover & add Bran's Story (direct fr/GR) then go in to add it to my review & it says book not found? But, but, but... I just added it! I finally just copied & pasted the cover into my review but there's sooooooo many green covers on my shelves that have actual covers. (Translation: I really don't want to have to do this with all my reviews.) I can see the self published/fanfic stuff not being recognized but many of them I actually bought on Amazon. Which, p.s., is anyone else worried that BL seems to be closely tied to Amazon? Anyhow, my question is is there a quick way to import the actual covers into my reviews?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 231 comments It's just a source. You can select from different sources under "settings" and, after that, on the search toolbar.

Optimist ♰King's Wench♰ So what you're saying is I can't just click my heels three time & hit the reload button & it'll all be perfect?

message 18: by Lynxie (new)

Lynxie I have to say I hate those green book covers. *twitch* I've been ever so slowly working through them to upload the right covers! *Twitch twitch*

over 2000 books... lots of missing covers. *sigh*

message 19: by carol. (new)

carol. | 86 comments Most of my green covers were indies or old, not well known books that I had been meaning to read, so I just deleted them and re-added.

I have a folder I keep of book covers that I've reviewed on my first blog site at wordpress, so I've reuploaded some of those for books where I actually had a review.

message 20: by Chrissie (last edited Oct 04, 2013 10:02AM) (new)

Chrissie I have to ask something here about covers. This is so weird. I have made a total mess of things: OK, first I had a green cover for The Guns of August. By mistake I chose The Guns of August/The Proud Tower which is two books in one. Then I fixed all the errors on the imported review by reblogging it. Then I added the correct book and pasted in the same review. The next day I found the correct cover and did it all over again. So I ended up with three blogs with the same review but three different covers. Then I went to Shelf - table view and found the book with two books in it and deleted that. Then I put all my books in order by author and found only ONE book listed. How come I don't have two entries for the two different editions of the book? And I seem to have three blog entries that say the same thing. I have made a huge mess but I do not know how to fix it. Have I got the book registered twice? If you have a book registered twice does it come up twice in the table? I feel like an idiot. If somebody wants to help me I would be appreciative. This is me: http://chrissie.booklikes.com the idiot!

SubterraneanCatalyst (thelazyabsentmindedreviewer) | 2 comments Hello all, I've been keeping up with all of this and have moved all my GR reviews to Booklikes. I am replacing covers right now. I've found the easiest fast way (I cannot vouch for accuracy!) is to just click on the bookcover on GR, enlarge, right click and save it, then upload it to BL.
I read almost all e books and a ton of them are indies so this was the easiest way for me to get it done quickly.

Optimist ♰King's Wench♰ IDK about quick or easy but what I did to both fix covers & adjust formats for reviews was to use 2 windows & scroll through my blog. Every time I came across one that needed a cover or a format change (I have a mac) I would alt click the edit button so it would open in a new tab & that allowed me to look up the book covers fr/Amazon, B&N, etc. Then I fixed whatever formatting was necessary, hit save, closed the tab & continued on down my blog. Like I said, it wasn't fast but it worked & I didn't have to gunk up the mac w/lots of saved pics. I did notice that it saved the original version as well as the updated version which I just went back through & deleted the original. I'm not sure if there's a quicker fix for that or not.

I was doing that also then I realize it's faster to use the Shelf view vs the Blog view. Blog view means you have to scroll through the length of each and every review possibly but the Shelf view you can see the green covers click and go.

Optimist ♰King's Wench♰ True. I had some formatting issues that needed to be corrected as well though so I needed to see the reviews.

Lynxie Agreed - that's what I'm doing too on the shelf view.
