Travis (travishiltz) | 196 comments So, all this talk has got me missing the X-men and wanting to read some.

What can you guys recommend that I can read?
I'd like it be something I can get off the shelf and try, rather than a trade.
I'd prefer something self contained, or that at least I can read without having to pick up a dozen other issues to keep up with the story and has the team acting like heroes and doing super hero stuff, rather than just spending all their time dealing with soap opera issues.

Anything you guys enjoy that would fit my overly fussy wish list?

I was almost tempted to be a real wiseass and say 'a team without Wolverine on it', but that would mean I'd have to stop reading every marvel title.

IF you haven't read God Loves, Man Kills - check that out... it is amazing. It is a self-contained graphic novel, and while Wolverine is in it, the other characters get equal time.
Besides that - that's a tough one for me... I really enjoyed what Claremont was doing in the mid-late 80's - but much of that is collected in trade, and often involving issues from other titles, etc. good stuff - but not what you are asking about... and they had plenty of Wolverine as well...
Anyone? I'm curious to see what some of you will suggest...

Travis (travishiltz) | 196 comments Actually what i'm looking for is an X-title that's out now.
One of the 128 X-titles marvel is publishing currently.

Lisa (lisadannatt) | 211 comments You can try the all new Xmen, you do need some prior knowledge. Not extensive though. It's good, but not as good as the older stuff

Lisa (lisadannatt) | 211 comments iPad Marvel app William!

Travis (travishiltz) | 196 comments So, two weeks later and I get one luke warm recommendation...?

There's 64 X-titles on the stands these days and that's all I get for glowing reviews...?

Guess I'll go back to picking up the Essential volumes.

Lisa (lisadannatt) | 211 comments I think we are all catching up on old stuff still.

Travis (travishiltz) | 196 comments William wrote: "64!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!"

Okay, that was a slight exageration.
Counting Wolverine titles, I think there are 12.

Travis (travishiltz) | 196 comments So, I picked up the All new X-men one shot and found it pretty entertaining.
Mostly because it was the X-men written like they used to be, not as the depressing screw ups they currently are written as.

It continues into a Indestructable Hulk one shot and then wraps up in Superior Spider-man.

Worth a look, especially if, like me, you were interested in checking out any of the three characters, but didn't want to have to risk one of the ongoings.

Thanks Travis

Travis (travishiltz) | 196 comments So, since the only gung-ho recommendation I recieved was a friend of mine who really liked X-men: Legacy and I tried the first couple issues.

Man, that was good.
For a character I never cared about the writer made him interesting and set him up in an interesting little corner on the fringe of the X-verse.

The appearance by an obscure marvel Golden age character helped.

Can't decide if I'm sad or amused that the brief appearance by the X-men had them coming across as not terribly competent and trying too hard to seem badass.

Sam (samvallen) In answer to this question, I actually came up with a pretty detailed challenge that highlights some of the best arcs in the x-history. It's over at my comic book/graphic novel group, The Nerd Uprising: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...
Let me know what you think of the challenge!
