JackM (jmbr) | 3 comments I recommend all his books, except for The Bat.

Jeremy Megraw (jmegraw) | 29 comments Reading Phantom now

Naomi (nblackburn) | 932 comments I am not a huge Nesbo fan for some reason and God knows I have enough read so I am sitting this one out.

POLICE (new) out mid October. It follows Phantom.

message 6: by Deane (new)

Deane | 9 comments Dex Jack wrote: "I recommend all his books, except for The Bat."

I agree. It is simplistic at first. However, it contains details and events that are referred to in other books.

Don't get more than half way through it unless you have Police in hand which isn't due out until mid-October.

Jeremy Megraw (jmegraw) | 29 comments Reading Police

message 9: by Helen (new)

Helen | 55 comments Not a huge fan. Going travelling to Iran instead. But taking Redemption Redemption and Indridison's Strange shores instead.

message 10: by Andy (new)

Andy Read them all bar the Bat & the recent Harry Hole story Police. Need to push Police (Harry Hole, #10) by Jo Nesbø up my trl as haven't had a fix for a while now. Likeable enough yarns, some more than others for me.

message 11: by Lori (new)

Lori (goodreadscomlorik) | 5 comments I have read them all except Redeemer (found it too nasty at the beginning...might have another try) and The Bat... I agree with you but also living in the area where it is set I found less exciting. I too have been told I should finish it... I just loved the Police!!! Couldn't put it down.... waiting for more....

message 12: by Helen (new)

Helen | 55 comments Going to start the Police tonight.

message 13: by Richard (new)

Richard | 39 comments I finished The Bat: The First Inspector Harry Hole Novel this weekend and enjoyed it, but it still feels odd that Nesbo chose to start this series in Australia.

Early on Harry corrects an Aussie who is calling him 'Holy' with 'Hoo-leh' which I assume is short 'e'. So I did learn that. I'd thought it was 'Hoe-leh' myself.

Unless, like me, you want to read all the Harry Hole novels, you can easily skip this one. Nothing carries forward to future novels, and those few bits of character development in this one get summarized in the other stories so you won't be missing anything.

Looking forward to POLICE.

message 14: by Andy (new)

Andy I think the BAT was only translated into english belately to cash in on the whole Hole series (do you see what i did there!!??) & act as a filler post Phantom to see what Nesbo was going to do next as his headhunter book is really neither here nor there....

message 15: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (elizabeth8921) | 20 comments Like the first half of "the Bat" with all the aborigine cultures and symbols. Not sure about the rest!!

message 16: by Richard (new)

Richard | 39 comments If you liked the aboriginal culture, you get plenty of that in the novels of Arthur W. Upfield with his aboriginal detective, Napoleon "Bony" Bonaparte. Upfield died in 1964, so these are very old works, but unique.

Brad | 15 comments Dex Jack wrote: "I recommend all his books, except for The Bat."

I only read the Bat, so I guess this means I'll be giving him another chance.

message 18: by Homicidal Muffin (new)

Homicidal Muffin (cecchig) I will be reading "Nemesis" at some point. Just finished Karin F. "Indian Bride" and already started "Black Seconds".
Nemesis will be my 2nd Nesbo book. Can't put down anything by Indridison.

message 19: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (elizabeth8921) | 20 comments Just got "Outrage" . Hope it is as good as all the other Indridison. comments?

I ordered Outrage and am waiting for delivery. I will look you up in a couple weeks and see if you enjoyed the book.
He hasn't disappointed me yet.

message 21: by Anna, the Enabler (new)

Anna (aetm) | 192 comments So far I have not found a book by Nesbø I haven't liked. Headhunters was OK (and brilliant as a movie); I've like every Harry story a lot.
My only problem with getting the only missing one for me (except his children's books, that I have missed all) is a self-imposed one. I decided in August to not buy anything until Black Friday (food, house etc necessities, and second hand books allowed though). So I guess I'll keep my eyes open for it now... Or I might make an one-item exception to my nothing.

message 22: by Bruce (new)

Bruce Porteous | 12 comments I agree with Anna. All the Harry Hole books are very good, as is Headhunters. I really would recommend reading them in order, though (if possible), as you then get the gradual development of the main character, and his career and other events in his life. There's a continuing story.
The Bat, being the first novel (and Nesbø's first), is less polished, but nevertheless good, in my opinion, and forms a useful introduction to the character of Harry Hole and his world. The later novels only gain in storytelling, ingenuity and writing skill.

message 23: by Jacquelyn (new)

Jacquelyn (jsglow) I have read all the Harry Hole books except The Bat & Police. I just got The Bat from my local library & am looking forward to reading Nesbø's first Hole story. Police should be coming in soon.

FYI: Jo Nesbø will be on The Late Late Show w/ Craig Ferguson this Tuesday 10/15.

message 24: by Andy (new)

Andy Thanks for the heads-up on Jo Nesbø, no doubt be on the Tube for us UK viewers somewhen.

Thanks for letting us know that Nesbo will be on TV.

Deane | 9 comments I just finished Per Wahloo "A Necessary Action" which takes place in Spain with a German main character. What did anyone else think of the book??

message 27: by Dee, the Insanity Check (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 652 comments Deane - your post would be better off in the currently reading thread - rather than the Nesbo one since this book wasn't by him

Anna (aetm) | 192 comments Here is the episode of The Late Show where Nesbø was visiting
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLRLKa...
A lovely Norwegian accent. I was watching that on my iPad TiVo app yesterday, and my husband was wondering why am I watching suddenly some late night TV show... well, there was the answer. To see the part with him there. How wild, a Norwegian author in an American TV show now? A good start for getting NN to be more mainstream or at least easier found...

(If it doesn't show for your region or something like that, set up a proxy on your computer that will have a US IP address. It's about 10-12 minutes of the end when he's there.)

Oh, and one mystery solved... in one of Nesbø's books there was some book by Jim Thompson mentioned. Since James is sold as Jim Thompson in Scandinavia (or at least in Finland), this of course left me (and a few friends who also noticed it) wondering which Jim was that, the one here, or the one who wrote American noir in the 1950s. He meant the American Jim... err, I mean the one who wrote noir in the 1950s. He mentions it on the clip. :)

message 29: by Andy (new)

Andy Nice one Anna!

Shame about Ferguson as Nesbø comes across well, relaxed & very sharp.

message 30: by Bruce (new)

Bruce Porteous | 12 comments Thanks for the link, Anna. Good interview, except that the Ferguson guy is an idiot! But I'm glad to se that Jo is getting recognised and receiving well-deserved exposure in the US.

In case you're not aware, there are any number of videos of Nesbø on YouTube, one for each of the novels (don't worry – he's careful not to give away the plot details), and one specifically about Harry Hole (where the correct pronunciation of his name is discussed)! They're worth searching for.

By the way, in these interviews he very often mentions Jim Thompson as one of his main influences.

Bruce Porteous | 12 comments Also, more news from the Hollywood Reporter regarding a new TV series based on a concept by Nesbø, is to be co-produced by Norway's NRK and French-German network Arte. Yellow Bird, the Swedish production house responsible for the Wallander TV series, and the films Headhunters and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, has already begun work on the first series of ten hour-long episodes. The series, entitled Occupied, is described as a multi-layered political thriller which envisages what would happen if Norway were to be invaded by Russia in order to seize the nation's oil resources.

JackM (jmbr) | 3 comments I watched the Yo Nesba interview on the net and also didn't like how Ferguson presented the item. Jo handled it well.

@ Dex,

Interesting, it wasn't on here in WA State but I will look for it on the net and watch it. I don't know that Hollywood will do a decent job of the movie, it's hard for me to believe they would, they never seem to.
What exactly didn't you like about the interview???

Richard | 39 comments Finished reading Police: A Harry Hole Novel yesterday. Excellent again; I really enjoyed it. Lots of plot twists and misdirection that worked. Often devices like such as Nesbo used fail, but he really wrote masterfully in this one.

As good as it is, if you haven't read any Nesbo, don't start here. Go back to The Redbreast which is the first one in the story arc that contines through POLICE.

message 37: by Anna, the Enabler (new)

Anna (aetm) | 192 comments No, start with Th Bat, the Cockroaches... Then Redbreast.
Although the first two books happen in Australia and (mostly) in Thailand, you'll get even fresher Harry in them.
