The variety of human experience is inspiring! There is no truth, only our personal interpretations of life. The Magus is one of my all-time favourites!
I love the book very much, but I think it should be shorter. the last 100 pages are a blast experience.

Well my opinion of Woody Allen movies is low, I find his introspective, negative and tedious movies dull and lifeless so perhaps if John Fowles wanted to reverse the comment it would be a suitable rejoinder - nil = nil

I've just reviewed 'The Magus' here on Goodreads, as it happens. To be honest, I liked the film: it was less pretentious than the book, which is let down, in an odd way, by the author himself. I felt he'd got hold of a very good idea - fanciful, it has to be said, but why not write a psychological fantasy? I just wish Fowles wouldn't insist on showing off his language skills - this is where the pretension comes in. Orwell was right: 'Never use a foreign word where an English word will do, never use several syllables where a single one will do... and ignore all these rules to avoid saying something utterly bombastic.' I wish Fowles had read this piece by Orwell before he revised 'the Magus' in 1975.

Now I know what Woody Allen meant when he said: "If I had to live my life again, I'd do everything the same, except that I wouldn't see The Magus." About the movie. Maybe he said the same thing about the book?
