Terry Weiss | 3 comments This book was read to me by my grandfather about 10-15 years ago when I was still in elementary school, and something recently came up that reminded me of it. I know it's about three different explorers who all had expiditions to Antarctica and crashed, and then had to get back to safety. I believe they were also in different vehicles to get there (one a bi-plane?, a dirigible?, and a different one). I believe one of them also needed an ice breaker ship to get saved? I also think one of them was during WWII era, or maybe they all were. Thanks for you help!!

Edit: By the way, even though I was in elementary school, I'm almost positive this wasn't a children's book. He read a lot of books meant for older readers, especially thrillers and the like. I loved listening to them and it led to me learning to read them myself.

Terry--do you think that this was a non-fiction book? Or was it a fictional account with none of the "real" explorers of the Antarctic involved in the stories?

(And my daughter can understand your Grandda doing that--my Father did the same thing with her. She was 3 years old and he was reading Shakespeare's plays to her.)

Terry Weiss | 3 comments I'm really not 100% sure, but I -think- it was non-fiction. When I was looking, I found a few non-fiction ones, but none of them were it, so it might be fiction. I wish I could remember more about it. =P I remember really enjoying it.

I'm also pretty sure there was a span of several years between the three stories.

... Maybe it was the north pole?

The Arctic Grail: The Quest for the Northwest Passage and the North Pole, 1818-1909 or possibly Frozen in Time: The Fate of the Franklin Expedition/ Both are historical accounts and go back as far as the early 19th century. (Both are also Arctic, not Antarctic--but thought I'd throw them out there, since you weren't 100% sure.

Terry Weiss | 3 comments Hey Lobstergirl! I'd actually kind of given up haha. I read Ann's first book and it was really good but wasn't it. The second book wasn't really it at all from what I looked at about it. Also I think one of the vehicles was an icebreaker ship or something if that helps. Did you find another one that might be it? Thanks, you guys rock! I love this site :D

No unfortunately I don't know what this book is. However, keep bumping the thread. Sometimes new members recognize things that old users didn't.

Antarctic Odyssey: Endurance and Adventure in the Farthest South by Graham Collier?

Terry, were there many photos in the book? Color or black-and-white?
Was it an oversized book? Remember anything about the cover?

This is too recent to be your book. However, read the description and see if it sounds familiar. It is the Arctic rather than Antarctica but it happened in WWII. Perhaps this is one of the incidents you are looking for if not the actual book?

Frozen in Time: An Epic Story of Survival and a Modern Quest for Lost Heroes of World War II

That is a different "Frozen in Time" from the one Ann mentioned above.
