The time has come to nominate genres for next month.

Any nominations are welcome but I would ask that anyone proposing (and preferably seconding) a genre has at least one independent book in that genre in mind. Any genre must be seconded to be included on the poll.

In addition, a reminder that a genre (or book, subsequently) that wins because of brand new members who have done nothing but join and vote or 'sleeper' members who are similar but have been around a little longer may be disqualified.

If we get a category that has but a single book nominated then obviously we'll go with that. If we get more than one we'll have a vote.

The poll will begin on the 25th of this month. As there's no Fantasy Book of the Month poll in November the book poll (if there is one) will be on the 1st of November).

You won't stop until the world's destroyed, will you?

I'll second zombies/apocalypse.

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 1013 comments I just have a couple of Zombie books on my kindle. I haven't really read zombie stuff before and I be scared;)
Not bothered either way thought I would just continue my job as Group Ninja

Steph Bennion (stephbennion) | 178 comments I'd like to nominate space opera, but that's only because I planned to put forward my latest book (I'm after reviews). Feel free to ignore this blatant plug...

*cough* Nothing wrong with blatant plugging.

I'll second space opera.

Suffering some computer woe. Hoping it's not too serious, but if I suddenly disappear (and can't therefore run this), that's why.

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 1013 comments Oh no, hope you get it fixed.

Me too (especially as I'm hoping to release my next book in the next few weeks).

Thankfully, I know someone who can offer me good advice, so hopefully everything will be ok.

G.G. (ggatcheson) | 60 comments just make sure to save anything you don't want to lose on a portable drive or on another computer/server. You wouldn't want to lose your book along with the computer!

Yes Yes Thaddeus! grab a Dropbox account quick (or a backup service) and back up everything!

message 13: by A.L. (new)

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 1013 comments You could email it to yourself as well. Drop box is a good idea, I use that, it is really useful.

G.G. (ggatcheson) | 60 comments You can also use those flash drives. They are cheap and easy to store safely somewhere. At that price you can have more than one to be sure too. I use 2 flash drives, one PassPort and one MyBook kind of drive. The whole computer is also backed up on my husband's server. I know it's overkill but I prefer being safe than sorry.

PS I like the Passport and Flash drive as I can carry them with me so even in case of a house fire, I still have my files. (documents, pictures, and music)

I had 98% of my bookstuff on a flashdrive anyway, and copied the lot yesterday.

I do occasionally e-mail myself, but keep forgetting about that. Hopefully everything's ok with the PC now.

Thanks for the advice/concern, everyone.

Yes! I use two Kensingtons and back them both up any time I write. What a horrid gut feeling it is to open a file you're spent eons on and see gibberish. That happened on my current book a couple months ago. My first flash had gibberish, too, but the second was good and saved the day. I replaced the first drive and renewed my vow to never become complacent about making those back-ups after every writing session. I didn't figure out what happened...I might have pulled that first flash out too soon at the last back-up but that shouldn't have messed up the file on my C drive. Paranoia doesn't mean you're NOT about to save wrong or pull the flash wrong and corrupt your own work.

The poll is up:
https://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/9...

Voting ends by the 29th, so get voting.

After that we'll have a few days to nominate books (if there's more than one we'll run Poll 2: Poll Harder, and if there's just the one we'll go with that).

Terribly sorry, old bean, but the vote has come and gone (Paw-Prints of the Gods is this month's Other Book of the Month, and you can read the thread here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... )
