IbNancy | 2 comments Personally I got into this genre between Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse books and Kelley Armstrong's Otherworld series. (still annoyed that ended!)

My first was Armstrong's book "Stolen" then I backtracked from there, then proceeded to read the rest up until it ended earlier this year.
In the meantime I picked up the odd "Dead" Stackhouse book as they came on sale or would find used ones.
I love the mix of humour, vamps, werewolves, shifters, fairies etc. and a mystery and a little romance thrown in for fun.

I'm up to date on reading Kim Harrison's Rachel Harrison's books. Waiting for the next to come out next winter.

In the meantime I've been reading some short story books by a mix of authors in the genre. Like "Holidays are Hell" a great Rachel story in there by Kim Harrison; My Supernatural Wedding; My Supernatural Honeymoon, which has a great story by Kelley Armstrong on the were's suppose to be honeymoon, that goes into something else.

The short stories show me how great these authors I like and others that I've never read are wonderful at writing no matter how short the story or long the book.

So let's get this group discussions started!!!!

Which ones are your favs and why?
Which ones would you suggest to someone who likes the genre or who has never read the genre.
Different books or the same one??

Mark Henwick | 5 comments Rachel Morgan, Gin Blanco, Kate Daniels, Harry Dresden, Mercy Thompson, Anita Blake, Kitty Norville - all great heroines/heroes, and there are so many more.

Urban Fantasy thrives on series and yet it's difficult to choose which to recommend to a newbie. It seems even more difficult to recommend to someone who reads UF.

The problem of recommending to the newbie is that many series are a little slow to start, but all of the above I listed start well (possible exception of Storm Front which isn't as good as it gets).

The problem of recommending to existing UF readers is partly that reaction to series varies so widely, but mainly that I don't know many UF readers who haven't read the above list.

And a general problem with recommending series is some outstay their welcome and descend into a parody of themselves.

It's a difficult thing, making recommendations!
All just my opinion.

Was just trying to start a new discussion, and by that maybe someone who hasn't read a certain series might be interested in picking them up.

I've read all of Kim Harrison's Rachel Morgan to date, and Kelley Armstrong's Otherworld books. I do have some of the Anita Blake and Mercy Thompson's books that I've picked up at book sales etc. but not sure which to start next!

When I came to the group page it first showed me no discussions or anything, so I thought I was starting the ball rolling. Only after I posted did it show all the discussions and areas of discussions...now I feel like a bone-head for even posting! LOL

Guess it's just the way the site has the groups set up when you go to their pages??

Mark Henwick | 5 comments LOL. I'm completely lost in these discussion groups.

Here are some recs by general category...

Faith Hunter's Skinwalker series is excellent kick-ass-ery.

Kitty Norville, with a werewolf hosting a late night talk radio show is fun. The first book, where she starts out as the omega in the pack is ... uncomfortable, but that is part of her arc.

UF with police procedural -> Diana Rowland's Mark of the Demon, or Kelly Gay's Better Part of Darkness.

Wacky -> Pierced by JC Mells, or Discount Armageddon by Seanan McGuire.

So many!

Sorry about that, apparently the setting for posts is that after 30 days all posts disappear. I just fixed that.
