"Here we are." Jasmine smiled. "I wonder how far these trails go?" She wondered aloud and took a deep breath. It was nice to have the fresh air. She loved to go outside when it was nice at home.
Ariel stopped and closed her eyes. She took a deep breath and let the cool air wash over her. She needed this. Opening her eyes she smiled at Jasmine. "Thank you for coming with me." She said.
"Anytime." Jasmine agreed. "I used to love running and exploring outside back home. It's going to be even more exciting with a partner." Jasmine began walking down the path.
Ariel followed her. She stepped over a branch before she fell. She was still kind of clumsy when she hiked because she wasn't that used to her legs yet.
"What it there." Jasmine warned, kicking another branch out of the way. "So what's it like to have a tail? And then to go from a tail to legs?" She asked.
"Hard. I am so clumsy sometimes." She admitted. "I loved having a tail but it limited me on what I could do. With legs I can walk and swim."
"How did you get legs?" Jasmine asked. "I mean, can all mermaids just grow legs whenever they want or did you have to do something special to get them?" Jasmine couldn't help thinking the whole thing was like a good book.
Ariel laughed. "No not all mermaids can get them. My father is the king of the ocean and has his own magic. He gave me legs and sent me here." She said.
Jasmine stopped short at this. "Your father sent you away?" she asked shocked. She couldn't imagine being sent away into a world you knew almost nothing about.
Ariel stopped too. "Yeah. He said there was a threat to me and my sisters. They didn't want legs so I was the only one who came here, but he said it would be safer for me here."
"Oh." Jasmine said feeling a bit guilty. She had thought the worst and now she felt bad. "Why didn't your sisters want legs?" She asked and continued up the trail.
Ariel shrugged. "My sisters have never been like me. I was the one that was fascinated by humans not them." She said.
"I can't imagine what's so fascinating about humans." Jasmine said. "We're destructive and violent and moody." She sighed.
"True but at what cost do we have all of those things?" Jasmine asked. "We help to destroy the place you call home."
Ariel looked down. "I know but you guys also create. I envied you because you had such beautiful things and I wanted them." She said
Jasmine smiled kindly at her. "I understand. The grass is always greener on the other side, right?" She said with a grim smile.
Ariel nodded solomly. "In this case I believe it is." She said. She missed home but if she hasn't come here then she wouldn't have met the people she did.
"Do you think you'll ever go back?" Jasmine asked. "I mean do you have any responsibilities or anything like that?" She thought of everything she had left behind.
Ariel furrowed her brow. "I miss it but I'm not sure if I would go back if I was given the choice. I have six other sisters that could run the kingdom without me." She said.
Jasmine almost fell flat on her face. "Kingdom? You're a princess?" She stuttered. "That is so amazing how have you not mentioned this sooner?"
Ariel blushed. "It's not that big a deal." She said embarrassed. "I don't even like being a princess. It's to much work."
"Sorry didn't mean to freak out." Jasmine paused. "You know, for years I had dreams that I was a princess of another land. It always felt so real and sometimes I could have sworn it had really happened." Jasmine stopped she had never told anyone that before.
Ariel had still been walking but when she saw that Jasmine had stopped she turned around. "What? That's not weird. A lot of girls dream about that don't they? And you didn't freak me out. I just have never told people that. I'm not even sure if I've told Eric."
"I'm glad you told me. Oh and that wasn't the weird part. The weird part was sometimes I would wake up and there would be sand in my bed. I even adopted a pet tiger, I mean what are the odds of finding one of those." Jasmine scoffed. "Oh, and then there was him."
Ariel's brow furrowed. "Him? Whose him?" She asked. This story sounded a bit strange. She had never heard anything like this.
Jasmine sighed. She might as well tell her, Ariel was her best friend. "In my dreams I was a princess of a desert land and there was a boy. He was a street boy, a commoner but he was sweet and funny and I began to fall in love with him. He always felt so real, dark, messy hair, warm brown eyes, beautiful smile." she sighed again.
Ariel looked at her friend with sadness. It must be horrible to fall in love with a dream. "Do you still have those dreams?" She asked curiously.
"Sometimes. And every time they feel more real. It truly feels like I go someplace else in my dreams." Jasmine said a bit wistfully. "You want to know something else?" She asked.
"What?" She asked enraptured by the story. Anything was possible at this point considering she herself was a mermaid.
"I thought I saw someone from my dreams yesterday, here at the school." She said. She had wanted to laugh to lighten it but she couldn't seem to do it. "I know I saw them but I also know that's not possible."
Ariel thought about it. "Maybe they aren't dreams at all. Maybe they are really happening. I mean anything is possible. I'm a mermaid for crying out loud."
Jasmine had never thought anyone but herself could think that possible. "True. You are the best friend I could ever hope for." She paused. "If one person from my dreams is real, I wonder if they all could be." She mused aloud.
"They could be. Maybe we should go investigate and ask the headmistress or something and try and figure out if they really are here." She suggested.
"Maybe, but if she asks why we care I could get institutionalized." Jasmine said. "Imagine this. 'hello does a sorcerer named Jafar go to this school? No? Well sorry I guess he really is just from my dreams'" Jasmine looked at her.
"Then I'll ask if someone named Jafar goes here. You won't even have to ask." She said. She wanted to help her friend like she had help her.
"You are fantastic, you know that?" She walked over to Ariel and hugged her tight. "I've never had a friend like you before ever." Jasmine told her.
Ariel hugged her back. "And I've never had a friend like you either." She said smiling. She pulled away. "Now lets go investigate."
Jasmine pulled back a huge grin lighting up her face. She had a friend and she might find the boy of her dreams, literally. "I'm in!"
Ariel grinned and began walking back towards the school. She wasn't watching where she was going and ended up tripping on a rock. She fell and scraped her hands. "Damn." She muttered.
Jasmine offered her a hand up. "I can clean that up for you when we get back to the school." She grinned. "Where, might I ask, does a mermaid princess learn to cuss?"
Ariel took her offered hand. "The same place I learned English." She said blushing. "We do use the same words at home you know."
Jasmine blushed but it didn't show much on her skin. "Sorry, I guess... well I guess I though you might not have the same curses down there."
Ariel laughed. "It's okay. You don't have to apologize. I rarely cuss so you couldn't have known." She said smiling.
"Me neither but I do know quite a few. High school." She huffed. "So where should we start looking?" She asked, thinking aloud.
Ariel shrugged. "Headmistress? I mean she has to know all of the students right?" She asked as she began walking again.
"Sounds good to me." She caught up to Ariel and matched her stride. "If he doesn't exist you are welcome to institutionalize me." She told her a bit too cheerfully.
