Courage is also wisdom. The effect of this statement is that fighting in an unwinnable situation isn't really courageous at all. True courage requires foresight of possible results. Thus, a military education should contain more than practice in battle formations and physical education, and should extend to multiple fields. Plato insists in his dialogues that Spartans were secret philosophers, and this insistence extends to his ideal military. This is a net positive- when an entire society is on-board with the direction of that society, it allows the military to act with conviction and accept direction with their entire soul.
