The Tin Drum
question
The Witch

I spent a lot of time in The Tin Drum feeling like I was missing almost all the symbolism and analogies in the book. I almost gave up because of this, but the book got better for me after the first 100-150 pages, so I stuck at it.
Then right at the end, the wicked witch (black as pitch) becomes the key symbol. Oskar deliberately conjures it up as a fear while fleeing the police. It seemed to quickly come out of nowhere, yet it's what the book ends with.
What's the meaning of this symbol?
I can see a few aspects of it (eg. contrast with nurses' white) and think of a few possibilities, but none of them quite seems to fit.
