I'm not super far into the book, but I wonder if it could have something to do with the fact that the narrator's father was protecting his son, or being a hero. I don't know! :)
I thought that it was you could only hurt him if you weren't trying to hurt him, or you were trying to protect him.
I have two theories. Either one has to be one of the "Faithful," believers in good Epics. Or you have to not be afraid of Steelheart.
