What was the first book you ever read with sex in it?
Judy Blume's Forever! A bunch of us in 7th grade all passed around the book, with the exact pages dog-eared. I mostly thought "well, that sounds messy." (Which is true, it is messy. :)

Loved Judy Blume growing up, starting with Tales of a Fourth-Grade Nothing! Wifey was another book that I rad on the sly. I don't think I read Summer Sisters.
My daughter leap-frogged over Judy when she was 11 and grabbed my copy of Jennifer Crusie's Bet Me without asking. Ah, well. She doesn't show any signs of being traumatized from it.
V.C. Andrews' My Sweet Audrina. I was about ten and I picked it up at a garage sale for a quarter because I thought the name Audrina was beautiful. The sex in it is incredibly violent -- the center plot point is basically a gang rape and the repressed memories thereof -- and . . . yeah. I was much too young to read it.
The first one I remember was Terry Goodkind's Stone of Tears - I suppose a black magic sex ritual counts!
This is a really good question, namely because I think it's only been recently--like 10 years ago--when I first read a graphic sex scene. James Clavell's "Shogun" got beautifully erotic at times, but that wasn't the first for me.
Honestly, I think it was Terry Goodkind's "The Temple of Winds."
Judy Blume's "Forever"...old battered copy that we swapped around at Girl Scout Camp. Someone even was nice enough to underline the dirty parts. What was so great is so many girls had it they had underline a lot of parts that were not dirty because they thought it might be dirty.
For me it was "Not As A Stranger" by Morton Thompson, followed quickly thereafter by "Steamboat Gothic" by Frances Parkinson Keyes and "The Hepburn" by Jan Westcott.

Mine was Plains of Passage by Jean Auel around 12 I think.
I jumped right from the juvenile section at the library into the harlequin presents when I was 11 but...there was no real sex in them in those days. Just lots of sexual tension and then surprise! Your parents are here and we're getting married. I think the first book with sex was Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean Auel. Funny how many of us have a Jean Auel book as our first!
Thanks for all these replies! It does seem funny how it seemed to be Jean M Auel or Judy Blume for our first sexy books! My mum was horrified when she figured out what was in it (they seemed so anthropologically educational), but we used to get these coupons in school based on how many pages we read, and Auels books were HUUUUUGE. I got candy for a whole year with those babies ;-) I never read 'Forever', but I think I might pick up a copy :-) I still remember 'Are you there God, it's me Margaret' though. Kelly - Oh my god, I can't imagine reading a V.C. Andrews as your first sexy book. Did it influence the way you thought about sex at all? How about the rest of you? Did the first sexy books you read have any lasting influence towards the real thing? :-D
I think "Dawn" by V.C. Andrews was the first book with sex in that I read; at least it is the book that first comes to mind. I was twelve.I'm pretty sure I didn't suffer from it because I didn't really get what was going on.
I just realised that the books I mentioned above were probably read when I was about 11 or 12, but I actually read "Mila 18" by Leon Uris when I was 10 because my 15-year-old sister left it in the bathroom. After that, I read several other of his books, starting with "Exodus", so I have to change my answer. :)
I remember pilfering my dad's Playboys from the trunk of his Corvair (where he stashed them) and marveling at all that soft-lit goodness....But if it's an actual book, book then the the first thing I remember reading that had actual sex in it was Raise the Titanic. At least, it had nudity in it.... It was so long ago, I don't recall an actual sex scene, but I'm pretty sure there was one in there.
The first novel I remember reading that had a graphic sex scene was The Skystone by Jack Whyte, which I read when I was 17. I remember the narrator had sustained an injury to his groin area and felt that his manhood was lost. A lady friend of his (whom I believe was also a courtesan) helped him to find it again.I remember reading this part while riding the school bus, and I wouldn't be surprised if I was blushing.
I don't really remember as I re-read books a lot when I was younger, but it was probably either Auel's Clan of the Cave Bear (a popular choice) or McCaffrey's Dragonflight (definitely helped shape my thoughts on sex).
Hmmm, that was quite a while ago ... Playboy, fall of '71. I was n ine. The following year, I read "The Happy Hooker" by Xavier Hollander. Then, I moved on to the "Coffee, Tea or Me" series. By the time I was 11, I'd already had quite the education and it was completely skewed.
I would have to go even further back in time to 1973
by Erica Jong I’m sure of the year as it had just come out and was definitely the thing to read in high school. I would have to say that the best came quite a few years later with the publication of
by Paullina Simons
by Kathleen Winsor was once recommended to me by a friend as it had been banned in the United States for years after its publication. The sex was so mundane that normally I wouldn’t even mention it except to comment how standards and publications have changed over the last half century.
I'm not sure if it was Dragondrums or In the Hand of the Goddess I read them both around the same time.
Wifey by Judy Blume...It's funny, for a long time I could tell you which page numbers the sexy scenes were on...Have read too much now to be able to do that.
Warlock by Wilbur Smith. I was a huge Egypt buff as a kid and begged my Mom to get me that book. She bought it without finding out what it was about and well - as anyone whose read that book can tell you - I got a fair few shocks.
I have a very difficult time remembering the "first time" for *anything,* so I'm sort of ballparking this response. I'm fairly certain, though, it was Terry Brooks' _Magic Kingdom for Sale/Sold_. I mean...maybe? I'm pretty sure it was a Terry Brooks book.
I went through a 'horsey' phase as a kid and went straight from Monica Dickens kids' horse stories to The Horse Whisperer. Found it more enlightening than talking to my peers at school for sure.
Mine was valley of the horses by Jean Auel. I was 12, maybe 13. My literature teacher had asked us to pick a book from a list to read and present to the class. I chose Clan of the cave bear and then continued on the rest of the series. I remember being so embarassed when I had to stand in front of everyone and talk about the book (though I didn't mention those parts). Even more so when the teacher asked me how I had liked it!
Anne McCaffery's Freedom series (Not only was it sex, it was rapey-sex) and I was in Middle School... I read her Dragonriders of Pern series and searched the library for everything she wrote... and they came up. It was labeled sci-fi...Then again her Pern series while not quite as blatant had some quite rapey-sexual scenes as well...
Haha... Does it have to be a BOOK, book? Because I first encountered sexy times in fanfiction, I believe. I'm too embarrassed to mention what fandom it was, but I was 11 at the time, and very into 11-year-old things...
I was 12 and it was a Nora Roberts McGregor book although I don't remember which one, I do remember dog-earing all the sexy times.
The Valley of Horses, by Jean M. Auel. I was 11, and after all of my sexual encounters during my teens and early twenties, I would think "That writer is smoking crack." While detailed, what I read did not at all mirror my own experience.
Kelly wrote: "V.C. Andrews' My Sweet Audrina. I was about ten and I picked it up at a garage sale for a quarter because I thought the name Audrina was beautiful. I think it probably was one of the first books with sex scenes that I read. *shudder*
I read a lot of Loveswept books as a teen, although I think Judy Bloom's "Forever" might have been my real first sex scene. The book that really sticks in my mind from my teen years is "Lace" by Shirley Conran. Anyone else read that? Goldfish, anyone?
"Flowers In The Attic" by V.C. Andrews. After that; A slew of random bodice-rippers. In one a couple had sex on the back of a full-on galloping horse!
When I was in the fourth or fifth grade I got a book out of the school library that was about witches. You might be thinking Harry Potter or the such...nope, in this book the witch had sex with a goat. That was one book that slipped past the school board lol.
I'm in good company here, it was definitely Clan of the Cave bear, with Dragonflight coming in at a close second!
Are we talking oral or vaginal sex? The first book I read that contained oral sex was Silver's Bane, which had the worst sex scene I've ever read (the Sidhe guy is aroused by a female blacksmith smithing topless), when I was 17. The first book I read with vaginal sex was probably Clan of the Cave Bear when I was 21, and the rape scenes freaked me out big time.
I really sympathize with all of you if Clan of the Cave Bear was your introduction to sex in literature. I’ve just finished the first book of the series (and I must admit that it was a struggle). The trials and tribulations of a ten-year old Cro-Magnon girl within a Neanderthal clan isn’t really what I consider a moving and inspiring subject. The matter of fact way the men treated both sex and women made the act both clinical and boring. With the small addition of love and romance, the sexual act is so much better; even in print.
Fanfiction.net and fictionpress.com. There was... a lot of smut to read. I can't remember the exact titles to the ones I read, but there was an original story on fictionpress about a cowboy and cowgirl that I found quite charming. The sex scenes weren't too vulgar, so there wasn't much trauma for my curious little 14 year old brain. For an actual BOOK, do the Tales of the Otori count? It's really mild, but technically that would be it. I bought my first actual smutty book when I was 20, otherwise.
Heather wrote: "Are we talking oral or vaginal sex? Lol, that could actually be kinda hot :-) But dangerous!
TBH, I did actually read Clan of the Cave Bear first but didn't include it here as it was so rapey and I was in a romance frame of mind when I asked the question, which makes everybody's answers all the more interesting!! Thank you so much everyone, I am really enjoying reading all these replies, and I think it is incredible how many and which books we had in common!
Something Wonderful by Judith McNaught. I read all of her historical romances when I was 15 and LOVED them. The sex is not realistic what-so-ever but I still enjoy reading them from time to time.
I'm surprised no one mentioned Shogun by James Clavell. Maybe it wasn't anyone 'first' but he wrote a few scenes that had you hearing "wacka-wacka-wa-wa-wacka" in your head.
TBH, with me, the question would really need to be when I started recognizing that they were sex scenes. I moved to full length novels sometime around age six. Didn't necessarily understand what was really going on. That said, still not sure what my answer ought to be.Could have been the Pern books, I know I started those pretty early and kept at them for a long time. Might have been Friday or one of the other Heinlein novels sitting on my parents' shelves. Might have been one of Piers Anthony's books, there's some sex in them, especially his older science fiction. Anthony, Heinlein, and McCaffrey were my earliest favorites.
Thanks to my ADHD I'm having a hard time remembering for certain if it was Flowers in the Attic by V.C. Andrews or Forever by Judy Blume. I'm pretty sure it was Flowers in the Attic and that it was in elementary school, sixth grade I think. I had seen the movie and just had to read the book. I was a V.C. Andrews addict after that and read everything of her's and eventually the ghost writer that took over. I think I read Forever in junior high, and after Are you there God, it's me Margaret it's my favorite Judy Blume book. I remember going to visit one of my mother's cousins who'd just moved down from New York when I was about 11 or 12. My parents never learned English so they were pretty clueless about anything I read, they were just happy I loved to read. My mother boasted to her cousin about my love of reading and of course the woman asked me what I had been reading lately. When I told her it was V.C. Andrews books she laughed "Well, I wasn't expecting that, you certainly are reading things beyond your age group." Thankfully she didn't feel the need to tell my mother, which I was very grateful for.
"The mists of Avalon" by Marion Zimmer Bradley...at least that's the first one I remember. Still one of my favorite books, though. I read it in 7th grade and did a book report on it. Hah!

I learned to read at age three. Also, how did your teachers deal with your obvious speed at reading? My first grade teacher would not let me advance upward, so I was stuck reading first grade level books in class when I read at a fifth grade level at the time. They also had me tested for a gifted program, but you had to test into math, reading and writing at the highest percentile, which I wasn't able to do, and then they never re-tested me.

My brother was on the same track.
As far as how our teachers dealt with it, the short answer is that they didn't.
My parents weren't happy about that. My brother and I were in fifth and fourth grade, respectively, when my parents decided to pull us out of the school system and homeschool us for several years.
Both of us were, at that point, reading novels on our own in the back of our classrooms. My brother did so covertly, because the teacher didn't notice and didn't care if he was disengaged from class. I did so overtly, because the teacher didn't WANT me to be engaged.
I couldn't tell you the first book. I've read so many, and I continue to devour them at a prodigious rate. I remember grabbing anything that seemed remotely interesting at the time, it didn't really matter what genre it was.

This topic came up the other week in our Beaver Dreams discussion .... one of the members (Alex) mentioned that the first book he ever read with sex was Gibsons 'Neuromancer'. Funnily, this was the same book my husband had ever read with sex in it as well! My husband thought it was pretty good :-) I thought this was really interesting, as I have read the same book, and I thought the sex was okay, but nothing amazing (especially given what we read here!).
What was the first book with "sexy times' that any of you read? How did it impact you? Mine was 'Valley of the Horses' by Jean M. Auel. I was 12. Made me fancy blonde men for awhile ;-)
