Eileen I know there's a few of us who want to do a buddy read of The Hero of Ages. Everyone is welcome to join the discussion or read along with us.

message 2: by Eileen (new)

Eileen I've only read the first 3 chapters but off to a great start.

Hope to be starting it in the next day or so...had to finish up another book first. Hope we get a few more to join us. I did really enjoy the first two books in the series and looking forward to finding out what happens in the third.

Travis (travistousant) | 362 comments At about chapter 6 and more action out of the box than the previous book I believe

Travis (travistousant) | 362 comments Into chapter 21 and this book really has a lot going on. We are changing to different characters as the gang is spread out. Really have to pay attention to keep up with it all. And yay! Oh wait I won't say why I yay quite yet as I'm sure you will also when you get there.

Wow, your a fast reader Travis...I have a lot of catch-up to do. (I'm secretly hoping the Yay! is for the somehow miraculous return of Kelsier) :) Guess I better get to reading!

Travis (travistousant) | 362 comments This book has a feel closer to the first book than the second. I find it interesting how the blurb before a chapter is switching between the lord rulers journal ? And that of Sazet. Also trying to decide what is being implied by having one by Sazet. Where is this coming from is it being written as we go or is this a journal of assets implying he lives through this all to document it. Or am I reading too much into it. Also ten shun? The contra what is his role as we continue to visit his imprisonment. So many pieces and I'm not sure how they will connect.

I finally started and am a few chapters in. I agree with you so far Travis that it has a closer feel to the first book. I'm really liking the changes in Eland. He was always kind of a wishy-washy character for me in the first two books. But right out of the gate in this third book, he is a much more confident, strong, capable, and commanding presence. I much prefer him this way! Maybe he'll be my new Kelsier :)

Travis (travistousant) | 362 comments I agree Eland is the new Kelsier only a little less dark than the original
At chapter 53 and what a interesting course as it has explained the spikes purpose in inquisitors and also what both condra and colasks? are. But while we learn a few things there are a few new mysteries unsolved to keep us wondering .I keep eyeing the lesser characters as it has always seemed too easy to have Vin or Eland be the hero of ages but still I won't know until the story is over. Still as everyone calls Vin the hero of ages already it just seems like she won't be. I do t think you can be the hero of ages until you actually save the world.

Eileen Sorry guys and gals, a busy few days for me. Still at the beginning, I'll try and read some more today.

Travis (travistousant) | 362 comments Finished but I think I'll hold off with any final thoughts for the moment other than I'm 95% sure on this being 5 star mainly on different characters getting a chance in the lime light this time around. It made for a much more interesting story I felt. Now I've moved onto book 4 which had allomancy and is in the final empire but that's about it for similarities as we jet a few hundred years to the future in The Alloy of Law

message 12: by Eileen (new)

Eileen I'm up to chapter 21 and this book is excellent so far. I agree, there's a lot going on and I did have to reread a few chapters to make sure I knew what was going on. I'm liking that we are getting to know more about the secondary characters. I've always been fond of Sazed, Tensoon and Spook, looking forward to what happens to them next.

I was surprised by Tensoon's speech at his trial. It never accord to me what he said about Vin.

message 15: by Eileen (new)

Eileen I'm still a little confused about The Mist. Whose controlling the Mist or do we already know and I missed it?

Travis (travistousant) | 362 comments The mystery of the mists is fully explained at the end and I can't say ahead of time because it will spoil too much

Travis (travistousant) | 362 comments Tensoon and Spook really step up in this book and I enjoyed learning so much about both of them.

I am at the beginning of Tensoon's trial. I will be reading more tonight. I've always liked his character and am looking forward to hearing how he will defend his actions to the other Kandra.

Eileen I just finished Part 2 and starting Part 3. There hasn't been alot of action in this book so far.

So I just finished the part where (view spoiler) I am now starting chapter 25.

Travis (travistousant) | 362 comments I really didn't find the series in general to have much action. A lot of focus in characters and world building.

@Lisa the book gets bizarre and more mysterious buy by the end all questions get answered.

Thanks Lisa! I didn't do it, it must have been Goodreads. I'm not sure I like being so up front and center, lol

Eileen I'm not sure I'm liking this one as much as the first 2.

I suspect there's more to (view spoiler)

Eileen That's what I'm afraid of! LOL

message 27: by Eileen (new)

Eileen I'm still reading.

For some reason this book isn't hold my interest like the others. Not to say I'm not enjoying it. It's not like the past books in the series where I couldn't wait to get back to see what happens next. Maybe it's the time of year and I have a lot on my mind.

How's everyone else doing?

Travis (travistousant) | 362 comments That was the problem I had with book 2

I'm still reading...I think I'm about at the 50% mark. I just found out how the Koloss are created, and finding out a little more about what Tensoon is up to. Right now I find myself wanting to hear more about Tensoon. I feel like he has a very important role to play somehow. The parts with Eland and Vin are a little slow right now, but I'm still enjoying the book. I know Travis is finished, but where are you in the book Eileen?

J. (jdrew) | 140 comments Sorry all, I'm still reading book 2 and only half done with it. You all will be long gone before I even start book 3. I'm trying not to read too many specific comments as I don't want to know too much. Still from general comments it looks like book 3 is worth reading so will get to it as soon as I can.

message 31: by Eileen (new)

Eileen I'm about 3/4 of the way done. Finding that this brilliantly written book is full of so much information it needs all of my undivided attention. I can't see myself finishing before the end of the month.

What's great about this book IMO is the secondary characters being more upfront in the storyline.

I do have to admit some parts get a little confusing and I have to reread. It's not taking away from how much I'm enjoying the second half of this book.

J. (jdrew) | 140 comments Now at the halfway point in book 3. A good read so far, and I too am finding the other characters interesting and keeping the story moving. Lots of unanswered questions remain. I'm guessing the group, like me, has been too involved with holiday stuff to post here. See you all in 2014.

Glad you made it to book 3 J. I just finished it over the holidays, but haven't had time to post anything yet. In general I have to say that I enjoyed the second half more than the first half...more action and everything is finally explained. Loved the creativity of this author...quite the complex storyline, but everything fell neatly into place by the end. Definitely not what I expected!

message 35: by J. (new) - rated it 4 stars

J. (jdrew) | 140 comments Chugging along on book 3. One question comes to mind as I think back on all three books. I wonder if the author worked out the various "magics" before he began writing the series or if the magics grew organically during the process of writing the books. What I remember of book one it mostly talked about allomancy, and then he introduced ferochemy and now there is a lot about hemalurgy (forgive spelling as I don't have the book in front of me). Add to that the increasing complexities as the series progresses. It all makes me wonder if Brandon had all three in mind from the first or if the ideas came to him as he went along. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

The holidays completely took over my reading and posting time in December. It took the whole month for me too read and finish Hero of Ages.

J.,I understand what your saying. I still don't understand why hemalurgy (I'll go with your spelling) was thrown into the story. If I had had the time I wanted to re-read the second half again. Where are you in the story or have you finish.

I agree. I think the second half was better then the first half. It wrapped up nicely.

J. (jdrew) | 140 comments I'm a little over halfway done. With some luck I'll finish this weekend though I am a volunteer previewer of short films for the film festival here and right now there are piles of them to watch so it is possible that I won't finish Hero of Ages until next week. Because the notes here tell me the book wraps things up well I can't wait to see how it all ends. I agree with Lisa P that this series is complex and very creative.

It does wrap things up, but I must admit that the ending is not quite to my liking. I know you're not there yet so I won't say any more...just that I would have done it a little differently.

Good question about the magic elements...the way the story unfolded so nicely, I'm guessing that he had all 3 in mind from the beginning. Maybe not exact details, but at least some general idea. Of course I could be completely wrong lol! Could discuss more details regarding this once you have finished the book...don't want to give anything away.

Travis (travistousant) | 362 comments And for a fun read in the mist born world future check out The Alloy of Law its pretty good too

message 42: by J. (new) - rated it 4 stars

J. (jdrew) | 140 comments Finally, I did it. Done. All the way to the end I was pulled along by the story. The author created a complex world with unique creatures, a different type of magic, likeable and loathsome characters that all fit together and that he explained by the end of the series. I liked the series. However, I agree with Lisa P. Not sure I really went away satisfied with the ending and I can't say specifically why. I mean it all made sense, the metalminds certainly gave Sazed the knowledge he needed to put things back and that seemed to fit well. Maybe it is that I wanted Vin and Eland to gain the upper hand not be the ones who by sacrifice left the door open for Sazed. I liked what Spook became. And I thought the revelation that metal inserted into a person gave Ruin a hook to influence them was clever. Still, somehow for me, just wasn't the fantastic finish I'd expected. What about the rest of you?

Travis (travistousant) | 362 comments With all the loose ends tied up I was very satisfied with the ending. In fact for me this book was the best one in the trilogy.

message 44: by Eileen (new)

Eileen I agree with what everyone said. I too wasn't completely satisfied with the ending. Yet,I was happy the way it ended. I think I wasn't completely satisfied because of what happened to the lead characters.

Great trilogy!!!

I agree Eileen. I think that I wasn't completely satisfied with the ending because I tend to like "happily ever after" stories for all the main characters. When they get killed off or don't get what they want in the end, I am usually disappointed. But, that doesn't mean that I didn't like the story...It was a fantastic read! This is one reason I love this group so much...If it weren't for Mistborn being the monthly read, I might never have read this awesome trilogy!

message 46: by J. (new) - rated it 4 stars

J. (jdrew) | 140 comments I'm with Lisa P on the fact that without this group I probably would not have read this series either, a series I liked. Right now I'm reading a nonfiction book so have dropped out of things here.
Thanks for the shared reading. One of these days I'll rejoin you all.

message 47: by Eileen (new)

Eileen Lisa, I feel the same way about "happily ever after" with my characters, too. :)

J., don't stay away to long. We're always happy to discuss nonfiction books. Pop over to what you're currently reading and let us know what your reading.
