Terrific choice, especially for January! I read that book last winter and the atmosphere really fit with the weather.
I'm so glad you want to read "Light between Oceans" for January - it has been on my Kindle since the summer and I haven't gotten around to reading it yet. My birthday is February 6th. I had a book picked out, but I don't remember now....Will add it later.
I have been wanting to read Light between Oceans since I discovered e books, so I am looking forward to reading it and having a great discussion about it.Looking forward to seeing what everyone else picks
OK, for my birthday book in October, i have selected We Were the Mulvaneys by Joyce Carol Oates.
The Light Between Oceans was so good. Kleenex will be needed. And Jennifer - excited for your choice. I'm reading her new one (The Accursed) next month.
We Were the Mulvaneys and Beautiful boy are both on Audible, so will listen to these. Beautiful boy sounds like I will need tissues. Great choices.
Victoria wrote: "Oh! And I have Zara's choice, too, so I'll save that one."Did you want to share your birthday/birth month and choose a book, Victoria?
I agree with everyone - the books chosen so far are brilliant. I have tried to read The Light Between Oceans before but I couldn't get into it. I often wonder whether that was because I tried to read it when I was in uni and I had had "academic reading overload syndrome" - (my name for it) - (aros for short). I think maybe I should try again. What do you think?
Leonie has asked me to ask to have her included please. Her birthday is: 20th July
Her book choice is: A Passion Redeemed by Julie Lessman. This is the second book in a series so people may wish to read the first one, (A Passion Most Pure), ahead of reading this book.
It's hard to decide on a pick, but here goes:My birthday is 27 Feb and I choose The Enchanted Life of Adam Hope

List updated to this point. I hope more people will sign up and play along! We've got 3 choices for February!

My birthday read request for February 6th, 2014 is "The Pursuit of Mary Bennett" by Pamela Mingle. "Pride and Prejudice" is my favorite novel by my favorite author and this is a humorous continuation with the least favored sister. She doesn't get much mention in "P & P", but I always found her off key singing and piano playing and the way she fawned over their officious clergyman cousin hilarious.
Terry wrote: "My birthday read request for February 6th, 2014 is "The Pursuit of Mary Bennett" by Pamela Mingle. For years I thought that "Pride and Prejudice" was the first in this series. What I found out was that "Sense and Sensibility" was in fact written 2 years before "Pride and Prejudice"!
Please add me as well. August... and I'll pick a book a bit closer to the date - I'm sure there will be some great reads coming out between now & then.
Mine is July 2nd, I'd like to read "Thérèse Raquin" by Émile Zola!
Ooo, what a great choice, Audible has an award-winning audiobook of Thérèse Raquin.
Zara wrote: "Terry wrote: "My birthday read request for February 6th, 2014 is "The Pursuit of Mary Bennett" by Pamela Mingle. "Pride and Prejudice" is my favorite novel by my favorite author and this is a humo..."Really? I didn't know that S&S was written before P&P.
I guess I always think of her books in the order that I read them:
1. Pride and Prejudice
2. Sense and Sensibility
3. Persuasion
4. (the other 3)
I really liked P&P the best and read the others because I didn't want P&P to end. I think Persuasion was her last one and that's another one that you felt you went through so much with the main character that it seemed like it ended right at the best part! Unfortunately, Jane Austen died soon after that book was completed. Can you imagine just being a well spoken woman, leading a simple life, yet having such an effect on readers for 200 years into the future??
Jennifer (Gradually withdrawing from giving a damn) wrote: "Ooo, what a great choice, Audible has an award-winning audiobook of Thérèse Raquin."(I always wished my name was Therese... See? I can't even get my computer to say it correctly)
I have a bilingual keyboard, and speak and write French fluently.
Don't worry about that! Just making the effort is enough. Where in Canada are you going?
Leonie is becoming a popular name for girls here.
Jennifer (Gradually withdrawing from giving a damn) wrote: "Leonie is becoming a popular name for girls here."Yeah I found the same here as well Jennifer. When we named our daughter Leonie it was not that well-known a name which we liked. I've also found the same is true for the name Steven.
Fabulous choice! I may have to ask for a leave of absence from work - LOL!
Nea wrote: "January 14 - The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society"I loved that novel! Good choice.
Jennifer (Gradually withdrawing from giving a damn) wrote: "Don't worry about that! Just making the effort is enough. Where in Canada are you going?"My sister has a house up near Mt Tremblant. She and her family are going up to spend Christmas / New Year's there. I plan to go up there to visit when they are there in the summer. It's so beautiful, they have a French farmhouse on a lake.
Oh, that's a lovely area. It's, hmmm, maybe 4 hours from here? We used to go up there for ski holidays every Christmas and March break - I don't ski, so I watched talk shows (LOL)
