As Sam walked with her brother, they both stayed in the shade, away from the bright sunny day. It was a bright day, but also dark at the same time. Everyone knew that today was the reaping for District 4. The Reaping for the Hunger Games.
Of course some families actually enjoyed this. Others were terrified. Sam had seen this happen for many years now. Although, those who enjoyed the show were secretly afraid to be picked too. 'Cowards.' Sam thought at those people.
This was the first year that her younger brother would be in the reaping. Sam had high hopes that they wouldn't choose anyone in her family. Although her younger brother had only put his name in the reaping once, and Sam had put in in three times, there was still a chance.
Sam secretly trained in the past, hoping to be ready to defend her family one day. Her older brother had sadly died in the Hunger Games. He died at the young age of seventeen. Sam sighed, she remembered watching him on the big t.v. screen, falling to his death. That memory still haunted her and probably would for the rest of her life.
As she and her brother got ready as quickly as possible, she said her goodbyes to her parents, because, this could be the last time she saw them. Her brother did the same. As the walked out, they followed the path fate was taking them.
As the host of the reaping smiled and acted as if the Hunger Games were a good thing, Sam wanted to get up on the stage and smack the grin off her face. She remembered when her deceased brother's name got called and a different host did the same thing, smile and act as if it was a great honor.
For some reason, they let the guys go first. The person drew out a name. Sam had never felt more relieved. Her brother was safe, for now. Some poor family would now have to watch their son participate in the Hunger Games.
Then the host went on to the next set of names. As the host pulled out the name, Sam felt as time had slowed down. She could hear each syllable being called out slowly in her mind. She couldn't move, the name they had called was, Samantha Azure.
Sam prayed there was another Samantha Azure, but she knew there wasn't. She forced the best brave look on her face and forced herself onto the stage. She could see her brother in the crowd. He looked like he could burst into tears. 'Sorry.' She thought. 'I didn't want you to loose your brother and sister.' She thought. Then she quickly forced out the unfaithful thought, 'I will try my best.' She thought proudly.
Before she left, she was able to see her family. She burst into tears and told them, "I'll try." She was truly going to miss them. But, Sam wasn't lying, she was going to try. She had to, if she wanted to ever see her family again.
