Miss MacIntosh, My Darling discussion

Miss MacIntosh My Darling exists in a number of editions. As far as I know they all have the same pagination (except....).

--The 1965 hd first edition from Scribner is easy enough to come by ; and is attractive. This is the edition I will be reading.

--The 1966 hd first Brit edition from Peter Owen.

--Both Dalkey Archive (1993) and Harvest/Harcourt (1979) have issued two-volume editions. My information is that they make the volume division at the same place.

--There exists also a mass market edition from Signet (1967). According to the goodreads database, its pages number 1396. I would not recommend using this edition, or any 1000+ page mm edition.

--Amer Audio released an audio book (cassette) (abridged or un-?) in 1987.

--I believe there is a recording online somewhere of Young reading from Miss MacIntosh. That link will show up eventually.

The Dalkey volumes of this are quite ugly, which is fairly surprising for Dalkey.

I don't have anything else of value to add here, but I figured I'd throw it out there since these showed up in the mail this afternoon.

That is rather unfortunate. The Harvest edition isn't all that pretty either.

If anyone is still shopping for a copy, there are some nice condition'd hd's over at abebooks for under US$20+shipping. The hd really is quite nice, and you'll have many fewer problems with that spine.

The Peter Owen edition is pretty nice in its minimalistic compactitude.

The Amer Audio is most certainly abridged: my copy's not at hand but, IIRC, it's one side interview, one side Young reading from MMMD.

I have a feeling you're right, though I can't think from where that audio's been sourced. I must dig that cassette out.

On the 1967 signet paperback:
It's a ridiculously compact edition, a small mass-market paperback with super thin pages and a spine which is only some 2 inches thick (oh boy, the swelling). Super portable! But unlikely to survive too many outings. The page number is actually 1404, but chapter 1 starts on page 9 so whoever created the edition in the GR-database was not wrong to put it at 1396. As a compromise I changed it to 1400 (though obviously for purely aesthetic reasons above anything else). But which one should it be, 1396, 1400, 1404? Does anyone care?

Well, she requires a lot of patience and concentration, but I knew this going in. But rarely if ever have I found myself presented with such bereft melancholy, coded in such spectacular prose, transcending all notions of real vs unreal and what have you. I find I couldn’t possibly ask for more from literature. That’s the kind of reader I am, or have become, anyway. It’s that “this is why I read in the first place” experience. I hope I feel the same way in 1000 pages.

Still looking forward to this! :-) I saw the new MMMD edition was set back AGAIN. Now they say it'll be 10/23 but Amazon cancelled all the pre-order requests and it won't let you set up a new one. :(

They pushed it back to 10/23 but next year I will be doing a re-read with a podcast if anyone is interested.

Thanks Coral...I think my message was just letting you know I have a slight knowledge of MMMD and wanting to know more. Ordered EVD and looking forward to the readalong for it and yours. Am dedicating the rest of this year to reading a portion every day (out loud to myself works best!) and then your comments...delightful! Brings back some memories of a long bus ride I took as a young woman in that same time frame in the Midwest....some of those same characters were present!

Sounds great! hehe a long bus ride is a rite of passage for people who want to travel but it's steadily gotten worse. We did this to my daughter to get to her grandpa's and he ended up having to drive 6 hour roundtrip to pick her up and get her to his house because Greyhound was so messed up!
