Goodreads policy is to keep all published covers on the site, as users want to shelve the cover of the copy they have. Instead, we add an alternate-cover edition. See http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1... and http://www.goodreads.com/help/show/85....
As the author, you will have the ability to change which edition of the book is the default, which will come up in searches by title and show on your author profile. Here's how: http://www.goodreads.com/help/show/31...

I need to have the original image removed for a book cover, as the final edit on the cover is completed. This is for Damaged Girls III. I've uploaded the final, as an additional image in hopes that the first can now be taken off. Please assist. Thanks!

I went in to try and get through the new cover edition process, only to find I've already created a second book by the same name. I'm not sure how I managed that. I can't work out how to remove the blasted thing! But they both have the same ISBN number so I need to remove the second one and start again. Any suggestions?

Hi Maggie,Things were a little wonky, due in no small part to a recent amazon import that had brought in your kindle edition with your name spelled incorrectly. Plus you had your ebook edition marked with the truncated ISBN13. Rather than walk you through how to change everything, since there was so much going on, I went ahead and fixed it for you. I added the ace for the kindle here:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
As far as I could tell, there was never a paperback edition with the old cover, correct? As such, I just uploaded the new cover to the paperback edition. For the ebook, I corrected the old ebook edition and created an ace for it here:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
Oh, and I should point out for future reference, creating a new edition DOES create a second book entirely separate from the old ones. You then have to go in and manually combine the old and new editions together afterwards, so you weren't doing anything wrong there. And since no two records on Goodreads can have identical ISBN values in the ISBN field, we leave the ISBN/ISBN13/ASIN values OFF of the alternate cover edition. Instead, we put a note into the description as well as a librarian's note onto the record indicating that it's an ACE for a certain ISBN. Hope that helps. And I totally forgot to mention that you can follow the directions here to set whichever edition you like as the default:
https://www.goodreads.com/help/show/3...
Z-squared - you're my hero! THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU.I had no idea any of that stuff was going on; I was just hopelessly confused that nothing seemed to be working the way it should. OR maybe I wasn't working the way I should. (head-desk)
You're right: the paperback edition has only just come out and that's why I went in to change all this (the cover changed when the paperback version was released).
I notice there are several editions of the ebook that I didn't know were there! Do I now need to go in and combine stuff so that only one edition of the ebook is showing? What's the standard process followed? I'm a bit scared to do anything now!
Thank you again. I really appreciate the help.
Maggie
(PS I've just been and looked at the different versions again, and the one dated August 6th (which I have no idea how/what happened to create that one) has the wrong cover on it. The suitcase girl cover was only created a month or so ago, and I only uploaded it a the start of December. Does this matter?)
yes it matters. I went fishing for other ebook editions from smashwords because I wanted to be sure they were all there for you. I might have gotten dates wrong, but every edition with the old cover I verified did exist at some point, as evidenced by cached Google searches. but I am not perfect -- if you see something wrong, can you copy and paste the link to the exact edition in question? I'll take a look when I can, but right now I'm on a mobile and unable to do edits.
PS: all the editions are already combined. I don't know for sure what it looks like on your author dashboard, but from a Joe Schmoe perspective, they look right.
Hi. I have an new cover for my book, and I understand the "alternate cover edition" thing, I think. But now I'm all confused and anxious that I'm going to do something stupid (which is so very likely). So: To make an alternative cover edition, I basically load the same book information a second time, with the new cover, but leave the ISBN (or in my case ASIN) blank? How do I make sure that reviews and ratings are all merged together, so that the stats reflect accurately? I don't want to screw this up and skew my stats or do something that gets my author status revoked. My book is: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... Thanks for any help!
"To make an alternative cover edition, I basically load the same book information a second time, with the new cover, but leave the ISBN (or in my case ASIN) blank."Next, you'll have to ask a librarian to combine the ACE to the book's main entry on GR. The reviews and ratings will also be combined to your ACE.
or you can just provide us with link to your new cover and a librarian will create an ACE for you.
I *love* the second option, if that's okay. I feel much more confident if a librarian does it. Here's the amazon link showing the new cover. Thank you! So much!http://www.amazon.com/Move-Sun-Signal...

The alternate cover edition has been created and combined: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/19....
Librarians cannot set the default edition of a book, this is something only the author can do. So you will have to do this yourself by following the instructions here: http://www.goodreads.com/help/show/31...
FYI, authors have the ability to combine (but not separate) editions of their own books. So while it is always fine for an author to ask here for assistance, they actually can create their own alternate editions with no librarian assistance if they wish to do so.
I didn't know that! I thought they can't that's why many authors ask for assistance when combining. Lol
This is probably going to sound like a stupid question but . . . after all the help this amazing forum has given me in setting up the alternate cover (thank you! I am so grateful), I find when I go into my own dashboard and can see the book listed there, it still has the original cover showing. Is this simply because that's the way the system works? Or is there something I can do to update the cover on my dashboard?
The cover that you see is the default edition of that book.Goodreads Authors can now choose which edition they want to be the default edition for their books. Goodreads Authors (and Goodreads Employees) are the only people who can use this feature, and they can only do so for books on which they are the primary author.
To use this feature, go to the edition you wish to set as the default, and click the "edit" link. On the edition's edit page there will be a link on the right side, about mid-way down the page and just before the link to refresh stats, to "Set this book as the primary edition for this work".

Hmm. I went in and checked all the old-cover editions of the book and none of them are set as the primary edition. The one I want to be set as the primary edition is showing as such on its page, so all seems to be well there EXCEPT that I still have the wrong cover showing on my dashboard. Methinks I may be stuck with that???
Z-squared wrote: "yes it matters. I went fishing for other ebook editions from smashwords because I wanted to be sure they were all there for you. Here's a GR link to the book dated August 2013 which has the wrong cover attached to it: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
This one should have the original cover. Is there anything I can do myself to correct this or is it best to leave it to the experts here?
(PS yep, the editions look combined on my dashboard too.)
:)
Maggie
Hi Maggie,No worries! The link you cited is an alternate cover edition, not the original. Here's a link to Smashwords, which is selling that ISBN with that cover:
http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/...
So that's a valid entry as is. I changed the publish date to December 2013, however, as you mentioned that the new cover was uploaded this month.
Ah. Okay, I'm with you now. I didn't make the novel available on Smashwords until August (whereas it was available on Amazon from March). But I presume because it's a different format on Smashwords that counts as a different 'edition', yes?And yes, I updated the cover this month when I released it across the board.
Mystery solved! :)
Z-squared, you deserve a knighthood for your patience. Thanks for holding my sweaty little hand so tightly through this whole process. I really appreciate it.
Ha. You are very welcome, Maggie. Yeah, old isbn + new cover = different edition. And we count Amazon kindle books as different from ebooks, even if they were both generated from the same work with the same ISBN.

The cover that is currently showing on GR is my original version. How do I go about changing this cover? (Is it possible to have both covers showing, for reader clarity?) The Amazon link for the new cover is here: http://amzn.com/0473240467 (for paperback) and http://amzn.com/B00BUCJV70 (for kindle version). I can also provide a Createspace link if that helps.
Also, I just attempted to add my paperback version of the book to GR and I combined the two editions, but I'm not sure if I've done it correctly. I'd really appreciate it if someone could take a look for me.
Thanks in anticipation :) and sorry if I'm being unusually dense about this.
