For some reason I am confused about the character U-Ba. I am thinking he is Julie's half brother. Is that how others saw him? If he is, I am wishing I knew more of his story. Did Tin Win know of his existence? Maybe not knowing about his life helped to make a stronger ending. I just can't help but feel I am missing out on knowing a part of the story.

Thoroughly enjoyed the book, although I agree with Patricia, the ending was a bit rushed and confusing?!
Yes they were half brother and sister. She was pregnant with him when Tin Win left. I don't think he ever could have known having not gotten her letters. I was confused only because he seemed so much older than Julie.....I could see 10 or 15 years, but the book seemed to portray him as elderly. He's clearly the person he described that came home to care for his mother.
There is a sequel to The Art of Hearing Heartbeats called A Well Tempered Heart. Also an enjoyable book to read
I was confused as well about who he was and several hours after finishing the book it suddenly dawned on me. Then I went back and reread the beginning and ending.
