What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

Trying to find a book I read back in 2005 - featured a guy who worked at a cinema that showed specialist films, dated a girl called Clare. Story was about some old films he discovered by a missing film director and his subsequent search for the director. Seem to recall book ended with him being kidnapped and ending up on an island with just the missing films for company! Any ideas welcome - it has been driving me mad. Definitely not the Paul auster book.
