I notice this is book one of a series, but can you read it alone? does it have it's own ending? I really don't want to get into another trilogy/series

I read it as a stand alone, and it was just lovely that way. It's a beautiful book, and you should not miss it.
Actually, I think the only other book in the series is this one: The Ash-Born Boy which comes before The Near Witch. So, I guess it doesn't really matter if you decide to read the Ash-born Boy or not as the blurb implies the 0.5 book is a back story of one of the characters in The Near Witch.
