Interesting question. If the gore is somehow directly related to critical elements of the plot, then I can tolerate it. I don't appreciate gore of any degree when it's done purely for shock value or just for the sake of it. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's contextual for me.
I think you're right. Shock value aside, if it doesn't further the plot, it's just gratuitous and unnecessary.
