Book-a-book of the Month Club discussion

Hello all! Thanks again for joining!

When I started this group I invited my Goodreads friends and left it open for people to request to join. I didn't make it public at the time, but I am wondering if I should to try and get more members. Does anyone have any thoughts on that?

Also, everyone is welcome to invite their Goodreads friends to join!

Now, I am not going for a gigantic group, but I thought a few more would promote some decent discussion once we get going. Maybe it would be worth giving it a go with what we have and see who asks to join as we go along? I was really excited that we have had two so far from outside my circle of facebook readers who asked to join (thanks Natasha and Alex!)

Either way we have a great start and I am looking forward to revealing our first book to you in a few days!

The small numbers is what attracted me to this group and the no romance novels. But in saying that I don't think having more people join would be a bad thing as long as it's not hundreds haha

I agree with Alex. I think that it would be cool to have a bit more people but not too many. Some of the groups have thousands of people and read about 6 books each month and that is just too many... how do people have meaningful discussions with that many people?

Thanks for the feedback Alex and Natasha. It is good to hear and I agree. We will just read, discuss, and let this little book club grow on its own. If it just stays who it is right now, that will be fine with me because everyone has been very supportive of my endeavor so far! Happy reading! I look forward to our first book discussions very soon.

The only 2 other groups that I have really enjoyed and kept up with are both about 90-100 people. I think that number works so well because it is still quite small by comparison to many groups, but still enough to keep conversations active and interesting when everyone is not participating (because we all know people will join and maybe read along but never be active).

PS - I can think of a few of my GR friends who might like to join us, but I can't invite people. Can you invite people you aren't friends with if I told you who they were?

Interesting about the inviting - I guess it never crossed my mind that you couldn't. You could just have them search for Book-a-Book under the clubs or if you want to give me their info I will invite them. Excited to have even more in the group!

I agree that a smaller group is more fun to comment in and I sometimes feel overwhelmed by the number of group reads I feel obligated to join.

Buddy reads are fun, when not the whole group joins, but a few people who happen to be interested in, have the time and the book to read together. That seems to be serendipity, though.

NOTE: I believe the way that Goodreads has their settings for private groups only allows the moderator (me) to invite people. I wish I could set it up so that the members couls easily invite people too. If you have anyone you would like to invite/feel like they would enjoy this club and the format, please let me know and I would be happy to get in touch with them.

I am just now seeing this thread. I prefer smaller groups, as I feel it is easier to actually discuss and interact -- not just post. In fact, that is one of the reasons I joined this group. Honestly, I have joined other groups just so I could see what they are reading, but I rarely post or interact there. It just becomes too much to follow. I actually ended up leaving most of those.

Thanks for the input! This does seem to be the consensus of the group which was good. It was kind of what I was shooting for, but then I got worried that people might feel different than I do.

I hope this group stays just right for you so you never feel like leaving!

I am really enjoying this group -- more than I thought I would. I'm just really glad my schedule has cleared up so that I actually have time to read the books (in the right month and not later) and participate. I've really like the selections so far.

I enjoy the intimateness of this small group as well. Even when I can't (or don't want) to read along with the selections, the group is small enough that I can stay up to date on the threads. I hate a group so large that there are 700 new posts when you haven't checked in hours. Boggles the mind!

Yup........I have to say, I'm in a few groups but don't really participate because they're too big and agreeing with Kandice, too many posts to read. This group is approachable and I feel comfortable enough to post at anytime, regardless if anyone answers me or not. Lol!

Josen, the comment about not being answered is spot on! I don't feel the need for a response every single time I post! Not to say I don't enjoy discussion, just saying...;)
