Elaine Nelson (epersonae) | 34 comments "It’s what happens when people get together for a celebration, analysis, and discussion of girlcanon - those often overlooked and derided books or other media that were especially prized by young girls and teenagers. It doesn’t matter if you identify now or ever as a girl; what matters is girlcanon."

What say you?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 259 comments Mod
Sounds fun, Elaine! I'm thinking... slumber party?

God, how I love this idea! I'm in. When do we start?

message 4: by Raina (new)

Raina | 106 comments Mod
Me too! When?

message 5: by Rachael (new)

Rachael (geminilady77) | 16 comments Nice, I'm sure you all know about this, but a friend was just telling me about a book she read that fits into this topic : Everything I Need to Know About Being a Girl I Learned from Judy Blume.

I didn't read too far into the website, maybe that's what this idea is based off of???

One book I remembered today that was pretty crucial for me as a tween- Hangin Out with Cici. It's about a girl who somehow ends up hanging out with her mom as a twelve year old. I probably read it ten times. Anyone else remember that book?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 259 comments Mod
No, but I could have used a book of instructions back then.

I'm wondering if anyone has a copy of the Twilight movie we could watch...

message 8: by Agathafrye (new)

Agathafrye | 751 comments Mod
I'm kind of afraid to watch that movie, but I would defer to the needs of the general pop. I seriously want to help plan this thing. What about a date in November or January, when the weather is grim and everybody needs a mental pick me up?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 259 comments Mod
Or October, with pumpkin pie?

message 10: by Agathafrye (new)

Agathafrye | 751 comments Mod
I'm going to have my hands full with the SCIFIFEST!!! at the library in October, but I'll go with the flow if that's a better month for other girlycon interested people. Did I mention the SCIFIFEST!!! at the library yet? It's going to be so awesome.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 259 comments Mod
What's involved with the SCIFIFEST, Kelsey? Anything we'd be interested in?

message 12: by Elaine (new)

Elaine Nelson (epersonae) | 34 comments I'm pretty excited about the SCIFIFEST, too. :) (the Friends approved the budget request on the 16th!)

message 13: by Elaine (new)

Elaine Nelson (epersonae) | 34 comments Something in the wintertime sounds good to me, btw. Not so much into the Twilight thing, maybe the old Anne of Green Gables miniseries?

I vote for November or January. Can I be on the newly formed planning committee, consisting of Elaine, Jackie, Raina, and Rachael? :)

SCIFIFEST-
1. scifi and speculative fiction writers Nicola Griffith and Kelley Eskridge are each doing a reading.
2. Jacob McMurray, a curator at the SciFi museum in Seattle, is putting together a 45 video presentation with a variety of scifi authors talking about themselves and their writing.
3. Bloodhag!
4. A SciFi fashion show emceed by Bloodhag with a variety of prizes (most steampunk, best Star Trek impersonation, best fantasy costume, etc. etc.)

Basically, it's going to rock.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 259 comments Mod
Yes, you can be on the planning committee, Kelsey!

I think I need to enter the SciFi fashion show. The only question is, Star Trek science officer, or Princess Leia?

message 16: by Agathafrye (new)

Agathafrye | 751 comments Mod
Either one is for the win, Jackie! I might be accused of nepotism if I give you a prize, though.

Should we seriously have a Girlycon meeting? Let's do it! No rush, but yeah, I'm into it.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 259 comments Mod
I think so! We could make popcorn and cocktails, and those drop and bake cookies maybe, and talk about books of interest to girls.

message 18: by Raina (new)

Raina | 106 comments Mod
I'm there. I need a refresher on feminist deconstruction. I've been out of the academic world too long. We can talk clique lit, protagonist gender, and romantic roles. It'll be great! :)

So, I want us to have a girlycon meeting. I'm going to throw out some dates that I'm free to get the ball rolling...
Friday night, July 31
Saturday, August 1st- any time
Sunday, August 2nd- any time
Friday, August 7- any time
Saturday, August 15- any time
Sunday, August 16- any time

What say you all, potential girlycon attendees?

message 20: by Elaine (new)

Elaine Nelson (epersonae) | 34 comments Weekends are usually pretty clear for me, depending on the weather. (Yardwork & such) The 31st is one of my Fridays off, so that might be good.

message 21: by Raina (new)

Raina | 106 comments Mod
I could do:
Friday night, July 31 (working till 5)
Friday night, August 7 (working till 5)
Saturday night, August 15 (working till 5)
Sunday, August 16 - anytime

Fun!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 259 comments Mod
July 31st wouldn't work well for me, as I have to drive up to Shoreline and back that day, and I'll be exhausted. And August 1st is family birthday extravaganza.

The rest of the dates work for me, though.

message 23: by Agathafrye (new)

Agathafrye | 751 comments Mod
How about August 7th in the evening? Wanna meet at Sizizis or Cafe Vita or...?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 259 comments Mod
Sure!

message 25: by Elaine (new)

Elaine Nelson (epersonae) | 34 comments I can do that, probably won't be able to be there until closer to 6 or 6:30, though.

message 26: by Raina (new)

Raina | 106 comments Mod
Ooh! I've never been to Sizizis, but I've heard about it (at book group? can't remember), and I'd love to check it out. Ok, putting it on my calendar. :)

Jackie "the Librarian" | 259 comments Mod
Where is Sizizis?

message 28: by Raina (new)

Raina | 106 comments Mod
According to Google, it's that one near the corner of 4th and Plum. There's a new block there (with the gas station/now coffee shop/taco truck) that has a couple of cool shops, and this cafe...

Jackie "the Librarian" | 259 comments Mod
Near the old Lee's? And the Filling Station? That's really close to me!

message 30: by Raina (new)

Raina | 106 comments Mod
Not sure what Lee's is, but yes, the Filling Station. Wow, I didn't know you lived that close to downtown! Anyway, I've heard cool things about the place. :)

Jackie "the Librarian" | 259 comments Mod
I'm right on 4th, just past and on the other side of the street from the Olympian, Raina.

message 32: by Raina (new)

Raina | 106 comments Mod
What an exceedingly cool place to live!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 259 comments Mod
:)

message 34: by Elaine (new)

Elaine Nelson (epersonae) | 34 comments I've been to Sizizis once...it's tiny & kinda dark, but nice atmosphere. (I just had tea, so I can't speak to the quality of coffee.)

message 35: by Agathafrye (new)

Agathafrye | 751 comments Mod
Coffee's good too. So, how about 6:30 at Sizizis on the 7th?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 259 comments Mod
Sounds good!

message 37: by Agathafrye (new)

Agathafrye | 751 comments Mod
BET! GIRLYCON, GO!

message 38: by Brian (new)

Brian (nerdbrarian) Sizizis is on 4th, between Cicada Restaurant and Lit Fuse Tattoo, just kitty-corner from where they're building the new city hall. It doesn't yet have much in the way of obvious signage, but it's the dark, foreboding place with the garland of dead foliage hanging over the facade (Not that I'm going to be at Girlycon, but Sizizis is the place I often go to read when I can't sleep in the wee hours, so it's kinda my second living room...).

message 39: by Agathafrye (new)

Agathafrye | 751 comments Mod
Brian, do you live downtown-ish?

message 40: by Raina (new)

Raina | 106 comments Mod
Ah ha, I THOUGHT it was Brian who had talked about it!

message 41: by Brian (new)

Brian (nerdbrarian) Yeah, I live near the library, at 10th and Adams, across from the new WSECU parking structure.

message 42: by Agathafrye (new)

Agathafrye | 751 comments Mod
I just had a panic attack that I forgot about this. I'm all messed up since I lost my datebook last week during the zine program at the library. Waaah.

message 43: by Raina (new)

Raina | 106 comments Mod
No worries - this Friday at 6:30ish at Sizizis :) Still on as far as I'm concerned.

Sorry you lost your datebook, though! :(

Jackie "the Librarian" | 259 comments Mod
Still on for me, too!

message 45: by Agathafrye (new)

Agathafrye | 751 comments Mod
I talked to Elaine yesterday, there's a chance she might not be able to make it. I vote to reschedule if that happens, since she's the one that started all of this excitement.

message 46: by Raina (new)

Raina | 106 comments Mod
Makes sense to me - when will work for her?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 259 comments Mod
Fine by me. We need Elaine!

message 48: by Elaine (new)

Elaine Nelson (epersonae) | 34 comments Ok, I'll be there. (Looks like weather isn't going to be so great for camping, which was the vacation possibility. Am on vacation this week. So glad I saw Kelsey, otherwise prob'ly would've totally spaced it!)

message 49: by Raina (new)

Raina | 106 comments Mod
Rock on! I'll see you all on Friday!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 259 comments Mod
Me, too!

Wait, what time are we supposed to be there, again?
