In the latter third of the book, connections happen in or near real-time over the Internet and satellite feeds. This is a contrast to the years adoptees and detectives spent searching in the 1990s and earlier. The Internet has given rise to “search angels” who offer to help adoptees and birth parents search online, as well as ads by adopters who want to “rehome” their child by giving them to a new set of parents. What, if anything, has been lost or gained by the increased velocity of this kind of networking?
