The Rise of Nine discussion

Ok so during the big battle scene at the end of The Rise Of Nine, there's a little paragraph about John feeling a new scar burning into his leg and how thats one less Garde to take back Earth and then Lorien. After this though, no one else ever mentions the scar or ever talk about it.

In The Fall of Five when Ella reads her letter from Crayton, he says something about there being ten Gardes, but Ella is not this tenth garde. Is it possible that this tenth Garde has died?

Was I just mis-interpreting that paragraph? Has anyone else noticed this and wonder about it?
