Allie Potts | 12 comments I just completed my first Goodreads giveaway and found out that one of the winners is now raffling off my book as a prize in their own contest. I gave the copy away, so I know they have the right to do what ever they want with it, but I can't help feeling slightly disappointed. Has this happened to anyone else?

Lee Cushing | 41 comments The way I view is that it isn't about the book that gets given away, it's about promoting the book so people know about it.

As for the winner giving it in another contest, that just generates more publicity.

Kim Headlee (kimheadlee) I'm with Lee. In fact I would rather that the winner regift it, because that indicates it didn't find the best home to begin with. :)

Allie Potts | 12 comments Thanks! I've started telling myself that as well!

J.L. Hill (authorjlhill) | 140 comments I'm with you on this, Allie. To me books are treasures to be read and savored for the wisdom and entertainment they bring. If I find a book that is so delightful, I might give it to a special friend to show them how much they mean to me. But just to put it up as a give away does you a disservice. If someone really wants to show how much they like my work I would appreciate a nice review over regifting. The one exception, if they regift it for a charity, that would be an honor.

Mihail (mihaildz) | 5 comments I would never give away a gift.
If someone liked your book that much to wanna share it with others, he should byu 10 copies from you and raffle them out.

LK Hunsaker (lkhunsaker) | 7 comments I'd look at it as more promo, as well. Putting it up for a raffle will get it more attention than just giving it to a friend. I hope that winner gave you a review in exchange for the free book, though! Maybe whoever wins it from her will do the same. :-) My last giveaway had two winners and neither one has reviewed it, from this summer. Maybe they still will. It's disappointing when they don't.

Allie Potts | 12 comments Based on the turnaround time, I do not believe this winner had any intention of keeping it nor reading it, which is why I was somewhat disappointed in the result. I would have preferred that someone win it who actually wanted to read / review it. At least the on-going promotion is a silver lining.
