I just bought The Black Country which is the second in the Murder Squad series. I recently listened to the first one (The Yard) and really enjoyed it.

Yes it was a surprise read for me as I had never heard of it before. I'm pleased my original Y read was so rubbish that I had to swap it out for The Yard otherwise I may not have come across it.
I went to my tbr list to recall the name of The Dead Path because something had reminded me of The Broken Ones and I knew I had another book tbr'd when what should I find but Stephen M. Irwin is Australian so I had to pick up the dead ones. I was never planning to do the Aussie challenge but now...
After finishing The Death of Santini: The Story of a Father and His Son by Pat Conroy, I just had to read a couple of his earlier books and so I downloaded Conroy's book, The Water Is Wide: A Memoir and The Boo.
For short books they seem highly over priced but as it was yesterdays daily deal and I was curious what a Bond book was like I got Casino Royale
Travis of NNY wrote: "For short books they seem highly over priced but as it was yesterdays daily deal and I was curious what a Bond book was like I got Casino Royale"After seeing Dr. No, the first Bond movie, in the early 60's I began reading his books and really did enjoy them as I did most of the books. Today I rarely see these films - I think it is a case of "that was then and this is now." LOL
I used some Christmas money to buy these books from Amazon UK:Harvest
Some Kind of Fairy Tale
Pure
Hurt
The Thirteenth Tale
Apple Tree Yard
Lisa wrote: "I used some Christmas money to buy these books from Amazon UK:I loved The Thirteenth Tale. Hope you like it too.
I bought The Bat today. I want to start reading the Harry Hole series plus, thanks to Cherie, I found out the setting is Australia, so it fits the Aussie Challenge too.

Nice haul Lisa, happy reading.
I just got my copy of the three parts of The Lord of the Rings. I plan to read the third one as a chunkster, but I first need to finish the second one, which also needs to wait for some other books...
Kirila- I am reading the The Two Towers now. I can't believe I've gone all these years without reading this series. Have you read The Hobbit? That, so far, is my favorite.
Because I have no self control when it comes to books, I bought these two books today from Waterstones:Frenchman's Creek
The End of the Affair

Loved Frenchman's Creek - you will too, I hope!
I keep seeing The End of the Affair come up. I realy want to read it. It sounds so interesting. Just too many darn interesting books out there, huh?
Thanks Cherie! I am so excited about FC! I love a good swashbuckler and I am a big fan of du Maurier so this sounds like the perfect book for me.Lol, there are definitely too many interesting books out there! I have known about The End of the Affair for a while but it seems to have been getting a lot of attention recently (particularly on Booktube) and that is what got me really interested in it. I think there is a film of it too, with Ralph Fiennes in the lead role. Might be worth a watch.
Marnie - yes, I first read The Hobbit. I did that last year after the first movie came out. I never attempted The Lord of the Rings earlier because I heard there are a lot of descriptions and there were mixed reviews around me. But I loved The Hobbit! And at the end of it they had the first chapter of Lord of the Rings. And it did not seem tedious, but rather exciting and interesting. So I slowly started reading it with an edition from the library. But I had to return it a few times because I wasn't reading all the time (too heavy to carry around). So now that I finally have a copy myself, I hope to read it. Especially because it is part of my first chunkster group. What I have read so far, I really really liked :). There was just one or two chapters in the beginning when Frodo and the others were going through some forest, and all that happened was describing the forest. But now it's exciting :). If I catch up with you, we can discuss the rest of the book!
My last bit of Christmas money was burning a hole in my pocket so I used it to buy this book from Amazon UK:Sense and Sensibility

"This is a "reworking" of the classic? What does that mean?
I just purchased The Road from Coorain
. I already read my book for the Aussie challenge, but I decided that I really need to read this one too!
Cherie wrote: "Lisa wrote: "My last bit of Christmas money was burning a hole in my pocket so I used it to buy this book from AmazonCherie, a group of authors are rewriting six of Jane Austen's works by moving the settings to the 21st century and having the action take place in the modern world (the only one not getting rewritten is Lady Susan). This is the first of the six reworkings to be published, the next one (which I think is Northanger Abbey) is out in March. I don't quite know how the stories will work in a modern setting but they have got me curious so I thought I would buy one and check it out.

Casceil wrote: "The Road from Coorain does look good. My TBR is growing by leaps and bounds."Oh, yeah, Casceil, get used to that! LOL I think mine has grown by about 500 books in the last two years since I joined YLTO. :)
I downloaded a bunch of new books among them The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd which I am really looking forward to reading. Also the sequel to The Far Side of the Sky set in Shanghai during WWII and the new Sarah Addison Allen title Lost Lake. If buying books was a disease, downloading has become a plague for me.
I have The Invention of Wings on my book shelf - I won it on Goodreads a few months back but still haven't managed to get around to reading it. And I've got her other book still to read too! Hope you enjoy it Nancy.
I wish it was only my tbr that grew. Last year I bought 100 kindle titles and a little over 200 audible titles. Probably 20 this year. I've read half of them. Just need to read faster than I buy.
I found rather slim pickings in audibles 3 for 2 sale but got A Prayer for Owen Meany. And The Five and The Crook Factory
Travis of NNY wrote: "I found rather slim pickings in audibles 3 for 2 sale but got A Prayer for Owen Meany. And The Five and The Crook Factory"I don't recall any of those titles in the sale. Hmmm - must go back and look. Afterall there's a Robert Mccammon in that bunch.
My granddaughter had some questions about finding some books. I logged on to iBooks Store to direct her to free books, and the first one was The Knife of Never Letting Go. I snagged it for myself. Hehehe!
Just spent some of my Christmas money on books. I fancied a change from Fantasy so went for some thriller and historical fiction with the following:
Now I need to go fit in the ones which are over 500pages to my cunkster list!

I did buy Tatiana and Alexander on Kindle for my chunkster challenge but that's been about it for this month so far. I also bought a new computer so I'm trying to keep my expenses down for this this month.
I just bought The Golem and the Jinni for my kindle. it was only $1.99. Now when will I ever read this I ask you?
Lisa wrote: "Just bought my first graphic novel from Waterstones:The Complete Maus

I just bought it too, Nancy. As a Kindle book it's quite the chunkster, almost double the pages of the paperback. Great price though.
Roz wrote: "I just bought it too, Nancy. As a Kindle book it's quite the chunkster, almost double the pages of the paperback. Great price though."A very good price! It's a shame the deal isn't on here in the UK - it's still around £6.99 here. Fingers crossed it'll be on a daily deal soon - my library doesn't have it :-(

. I'm going to have to read the rest in the series. That's the biggest problem here. I read one of a series and get sucked into adding 10 or 20 more books to my shelf.
I've heard so many people on here mention the Pendergast series that I had to get it. Been putting off buying new series books so I could concentrate on finishing the current series I am working through but I gave in to temptation!
Roz or Sarah wrote: "I'm going to have to read the rest in the series. That's the biggest problem here. I've read three Australian books now, bought another last night, and have downloaded the Kindle sample of a fifth. I'd blame Rusalka, but "blame" isn't fair, because I'm enjoying all the books.
