One of my favorite sequences thus far into the book is the descent into the painted cave. I can't help but think there is a lot of information to digest on pages 178 & 179 in particular.

The bird-wolf creation myth smacks of Native American culture, though my Internet searches haven't found such a tightly linked relationship between these two animals. It seems the common arrangement involves four animals.

The Ioway indians, for example, had three bird clans (Eagle/Thunderbird, Owl, Pigeon), with the each of the remaining clans focused on a different animal (Wolf, Bear, Elk, etc.)

In heraldry, the Enfield is a hybrid animal of fox, eagle, lion, and wolf.

Did you see this? http://wolfandravens.blogspot.com/

"Ravens are sometimes known as 'wolf-birds' because they form social attachments with wolves." And there are lots of old connections between ravens and wolves...
