The last full week of September is International Interpreters and Translators Week (Sept. 22-30, 2014), which inspired this theme. The 'Interpreters and Translators' Theme challenge is to read a book that was originally written in a language other than that you are reading it in!

Hmmm... I guess that I can count War and Peace here too. I haven't thought about counting the same book in multiple themes... Any thoughts for or against?
I think it could give a bonus: a book that can fit in more than one theme is even better!!!!
I'm a translator; I have to think about it closely!!

The first and the third count also for the French challenge, the july one!

You Europeans will beat me by a healthy margin in this category! Although since I started working on the Guardian list, I have begun reading much more 'world' literature.

Clive James? Wasn't he the film critic for "The Obersever" (quality Sunday newspaper in Britain) for years? Australian, witty, very outspoken... or is this a different one?

Laura, I just saw this post. Sorry to have missed it.
I had tried reading Jose Saramago's Blindness a few years back and could not get into it at all. I have avoided his books ever since. I thought I'd give him another try and because this book was small, this was it.
I'm glad I read it. I liked it and will give Jose Saramago's other books a try......maybe even give Blindness another attempt. :D

I'm loving it! But I generally love this family saga, and those written by the Singer brothers partucularly. We're arriving at the nazi period ... alway a big issue in their literature, of course ...
