Beatrix (smiley_omnomnom) I've always loved reading fantasy books, but so far I've been more taken to books with darker tones or books with a sort of grandeur about them. Are there any epic/dark fantasy novels/series that you could recommend to me?

Magda | 14 comments I could recommend you:
- The Summoner - really great series with plenty of magic, ghosts, some vampires and lots of other things :D
- Blood of Elves - because it's awesome and it comes from Poland :D say what you want but we do have some good fantasy writers (pity so little books gets translated)
- The Mists of Avalon - say what you want but this woman can write
- Wizard's First Rule - technically that was the first book in series, but there's a short story prequel to this one and whole other prequel series now, anyway his writing takes some getting used to, but I enjoyed his books

- Storm Front - if you like some lighter reading where 'hero' likes to get into trouble a lot
- Prophecies Awakening I really enjoyed it it's fast paced and has plenty of darkness in it ;)

also books from authors: R.A. Salvatore, Stephen R. Donaldson, Mercedes Lackey, Maggie Furey, Robin Hobb

Villains by Necessity turns the whole genre on upside down.

And I'm going to second the Dresden Files series that Magda recommended. However, word of warning about Storm Front--not only is it the first book in a series, with all that that implies BUT...it's also a "first book sold" book. They get much better after this one, but it is necessary to read so that you understand the whole world.

The Worm Ouroboros definitely has an Elizabethan or Jacobean grandeur to it.

Arielle Rae Aguilar | 126 comments Kushiel's Dart and The Deed of Paksenarrion
The second one gets darker later on in the trilogy

Cumbling Michael (CumblingMichael) | 165 comments It really depends on how "dark" you want to go. If, like me, you like it very dark and morally ambiguous, then Steven Erikson's "Malazan Book of the Fallen" series, and Joe Abercrombie's "First Law" trilogy, are very good examples. I would also recommend Richard Morgan's (Richard K Morgan in the U.S.) "The Steel Remains" and "The Cold Commands". Be warned, however, that Richard Morgan's work may be pretty strong meat for some fantasy fans.
