Great! Some discussion started in the nominating thread already. This book is really good, and pretty intense. I'd like to see the movie after reading the book. The movie has already cycled through my local theater, might have to wait til it shows up on cable, unfortunately.
I've just finished and posted a review, mentioning how I don't think I'd like to see the film just yet - too heartbreaking! Really liked the book though, I hope more people decide to read it this month.
"Twelve Years a Slave" (movie) won the Golden Globe for Best Picture (Drama) last night:http://mobile.reuters.com/article/idU...
Cool, MK. Nice to know, and glad we have the book read before, just in case people want to view the movie now.
A little late for the group discussion but I'm so glad I decided to read this book anyway. So far I'm only on chapter 8. It is heart-breaking. I will wait until I have finished to join the discussion on the spoilers thread. Better late than never?
I didn't think I could take it when (view spoiler).
MK I bought this book because of your post a while back regarding the sale. My mom wants to read the book now. Thank you.
Daisy, that's wonderful, sharing it with your mom too. It really is a compelling read. This stuff actually happened! When you get to the next thread, though, you may be wishing you bought the one Pink read, instead of the anthology. I tried to get my hands on a copy of the Dr. Sue Eakin edition through my library, or interlibrary loan, but ended up unsuccessful. I thought, for a weekend, that I would get it through interlibrary, but early the next week, the ones available thru interlibrary turned up all checked out, and had been mistakenly listed as unavailable, so no luck.
I dithered and debated, cuz I didn't want to buy another copy ;-), but in the end, I did. I had to have it. You'll see what I'm talking about, when you read the spoilers thread. It's lending enabled, so if you have access to a Kindle, and would like to read Sue Eakin's work when you're done, I'd be happy to lend it to you.
I haven't actually had a chance to return to it, to read it yet, but I will. Eventually :-p
MK wrote: "This stuff actually happened!"I know. It is awful. The book Devil in the Grove: Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the Dawn of a New America by Gilbert King is recounting some pretty horrific occurrences too.
As you write, "This stuff actually happened!" Aaaagh!
That is kind of you to offer to share the book with me. Perhaps I might have one, which might interest you, to offer to you as well. It will be nice to be able to get to the group discussion.
If you decide yes, let me know. As for borrowing one, I'll have to kindly decline, as I couldn't possibly consider adding any more before say ... March or April :-p. Cruising around goodreads induces the strongest compulsion to 'read all the books!', ala http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_D_Z-D2tzi14...
;-), to which I succumbed, and am now resetting to a more even keel, hopefully soon :-D
"as I couldn't possibly consider adding any more"I've said that before, lol. It didn't work. For me anyway, but I can relate.
Lately though life has required me to slow down a little too. :)

I saw a lot of differences so far with the movie and the book as usual I guess. I haven't seen the movie but I like that actor. He was great in Kinky Boots.
