So, your characters are the students of Wellmont Area High School in Newport Washington -- their mascot being the Wolverines.
When everything went down, Wellmont was luckier than most. They had a warning, however short, a warning nonetheless. There was enough time to evacuate some of the town before the soldiers arrived to take everything over. That portion of the town just so happened to have the High School in it... it sounds like a happy story, but not everyone in the high school got out. People were split up. Not everyone made it.
Conveniently enough, there was an old abandoned summer camp deep in the woods off the town that a couple students new about, having been there when they were kids. It started off as a place to stay... but soon it became a lot more. Now, Camp Wolverine is an army base of sorts. A makeshift home for students now warriors. It's growing in numbers, and pretty soon, maybe, just maybe, it'll be time to get their town back. But for now, it's simple missions... just enough to make their rebel presence known.
