Silence In | 2 comments Kickstarter is a strange beast, in that in many ways I think it turns traditional marketing on it's head. Generally, when marketing something for retail sales, you want the sound bite. You want the hook. You want the short statement that's going to draw the consumer in and get them to try out your product. On Kickstarter, on the other hand, a significant portion of the people contributing to a project want to know all of the stuff behind the sound bite. They want to know the story of the project, because they want to feel like they are a part of something, not just that they are purchasing something.

For me, this is the biggest draw of Kickstarter. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to sell a million copies of our books. I am certainly not anti-capitalist. But I love the feel of crowd-funding. I love the generally high level of inquisitiveness and involvement of the people who contribute to crowd-funding projects. I love the fact that the backers are intimately involved in the decision as to what does or does not come to market. I think so much of that connection has been lost in the general marketplace due to it's overwhelming global size.

Janine Spendlove (janinespendlove) | 5 comments I love the ability to pick the projects I want to see happen, no matter how off the wall they are, or small an audience they may have. I am an audience, and just because what I like might not be mainstream, I'd still like to see it. Through crowd funding I can help make that happen. Control is directly in my hands.
