The best review (and pretty typical -- there are a lot of five star reviews -- it averages 4.7 stars):
"I was completely caught up, though I was torn between wanting to rush forward with the story and wanting to linger to appreciate so much that was wonderful. The movement between 1940s England and 1970s India felt quite natural, and the two places were brought together by recurring themes and images. Five stars."
The worst review (not typical -- a handful of one and two star reviews) : "Sorry to go against the grain with this one but this is possibly the most boring book I have read in a long time. I found it so hard to get into because the places and the characters were so dull and I had to force myself to finish it. It's very unlike me not to get sucked into a book, this one is hard to get into and even harder to finish. One star."
