William Hiser Make way for Ducklings, written and illustrated by Robert McCluskey, is a sixty-eight page Caldecott winning children’s picture book published by Viking Press in 1941. It was written for pre-kindergarten through second grade students. This is the story of mallard parents, after trying several locations; finally decide on a home to raise their family. They teach their children about the world around them with the help of the people in their community. In the end, they decide there is no place like home and settle into a happy life on their island on the Boston Public Gardens Lagoon. This story introduces topics of family, security, community values, geography, and travel. It is an endearing tale of concern and caring about beloved animals.
