A Song of Ice and Fire - A Chapter a day discussion

Hello! I'm Daniela from Argentina and I'm the moderator of this group. Last year I'd read Martin's whole saga and I'm in desperate need of a reread, this time taking notes and discussing theories with other people.

Last year, I started A Game of Thrones on the 19th of July so I thought it would be nice to start the reread that day.

Now, some info about myself and A Song of Ice and Fire. At first I didn't want to read it because I wasn't an avid fantasy reader. Now I love all of the books and I started to read more fantasy.

My favourite chapter through out the series is Jon Snow, though my other favourites change quite often.

Hello! My favorite from the very beginning was, is, and will be Jon Snow... though there are several characters I really enjoyed reading. I've read the books a long time ago... and almost forgot the events. The thing is I have a terrible memory and the TV show didn't help me much... I cannot recall the differences between both (book & TV show... I feel silly saying this, but it's the plain truth :P) that's why I need a reread ASAP. Hope to join the group and read in time! If not, I'll try to catch up as soon as I can.

@Anilla With so many differences between books and TV show and the show being quite superficial when treating characters, it gets difficult to continue reading the saga if you didn't finish it. Of course you can catch up if you are not following us strictly, though the "chapter a day" part means we will read very very slowly.

Hello! I am Andrés from Venezuela. I was invited to this group by Dani (thank you!) and, since I haven't read the "A Song of Ice and Fire" books yet, I'm going to do so with you for the first time. Please, bear with me! I'll try to avoid spoilers as much as possible. I hope to enjoy reading the books with you, and overall, enjoy the fantastic world of Westeros.

@Andrés Trust me, once you start reading, you won't be able to put the book down. So "a chapter a day" will be quite a challenge!

Hello! I'm Vicki from, erm, the USA. I first read A Game of Thrones about two months ago and couldn't stop reading, finishing A Dance With Dragons just last month. I have been wanting to reread the books for a while now so I can pick up on things I've missed the first time round. Then I saw a link to this group in the ASOIAF book discussion only group on facebook and decided to join in. This will be my first book discussion group and I am looking forward to doing this with you all!

EDIT: Oh, and my favorite character is also Jon Snow, even before I realized a hot dude was playing him on the show, haha.

Hi! I am Clara, also from Argentina and I read all five books this year and I think it's a really good idea to read one chapter a day, because it's a time commitment to re-read them all, and this way I can read other books as well. I love all 5 books, and this is great for me because after I read them, I started watching the TV show and I have seen the first 3 seasons, and there are a few details I am confused about now (and general plots also). My favourites are Arya, Jon, Tyrion, Jaime and Cersei (too many, I know).

@Vicki Luckly we will pick up on things we didn't see the first time we read the books and speculate about others! I'm another girl who liked Jon before seeing Kit Harington act. He is clearly not my Jon Snow, not the one in my mind... but yeah, he is a hot bastard, so he is okay to play the part :D

@Clara I'm glad you decided to join us! I think a chapter a day is a great idea if you plan to read other books at the same time and it's a great way to absorb all of the information that's present on the books (plenty, I must say)

I have a ton of favourites too. I didn't mention them on my post because I was afraid you will get bored after a few names but it's something like this:

AHH I thought I was the only one who liked Sandor Clegane!! I love Asha and Brienne as well, and that one character that shows up in A Dance With Dragons. This is perfect for me because I can analyze every single sentence, because I will have the time. I am so excited you have no idea :)

@Clara What I like about Sandor is that he is definitely a grey character, but there are moments you can't help but love him.

Hi, I'm Kristi and I'm from Albania. I found this group posted by a friend of mine in Facebook (I don't know which one of them now though) and since I've always wanted to read Asoiaf I thought that this would be a good opportunity. I love good books, no matter what genre they belong to, and I'm currently reading Jane Eyre and Shogun. I love to read 3-4 books simultaneously, and I love to discuss them with other readers. I study medicine, and my last exam will be on 21st of July, so until Tuesday I won't be that active. But Tuesday is coming, so brace yourself for my comments :p

Oh, and my favorite character( based on the TV Series) is Tyrion. Jon too!

Hello, never really read any fantasy books intill last year. I did read the harry potter series and the percy jackson series but nothing like the game of thrones. I bought all the books and well, here I am :)

One of the things I love most about ASOIAF is that it captures all those readers who previously didn't like the fantasy genre (my sister is one of them; she's the reason I started reading Game of Thrones) and knits us together. There is so much to offer in these five great books, I find it amazing, and rare, for a book series to be able to do that. Also, my other favorite characters are:

4. Tyrion Lannister
5. Jaime Lannister (such a dynamic character!)
6. Theon Greyjoy (also a dynamic character!)
7. Danaerys Targaryen
8. Samwell Tarly (totally reminds me of Sam from LoTR)
9. Davos Seaworth
10. Ned Stark
11. Brienne of Tarth
12. Jojen Reed
13. Hodor
... but I'll stop there.

I thought Kit did a good job playing Jon Snow (though I still imagine Jon with that dark brown hair, sullen grey eyes, and that look on his face like he wants to punish himself for existing, poor kid - I love a good internal struggle - *SPOILER FOR A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE* (view spoiler)[and especially because he's a warg, I think the concept of the warg is awesome, especially when he thinks to himself: "If I am a warg I must be a pretty poor one"). (hide spoiler)] Overall I thought he did a good job portraying this humble character who puts everyone before himself, despite always wanting to be something great. What I like about Kit is that he's one of the few actors on the show who's actually READ the books. Sorry... I'm getting ahead of myself. I'll save it for a Jon Snow read.

Hi I'm José from Uruguay, I saw that Dani created this group and decided to join. A Song of Ice and Fire is one of the most outstanding fantasy series I ever read so I'd like to discuss it with other fans.

I have been waiting for The Winds of Winter for three years now so this reread will be really useful for me because I don't remember many details, also I think that reading a chapter a day is ideal, I'll try to catch up with everyone here.

Haha I don't think so. One of my friends loves him. I don't adore him, but I like him a lot more now. Although, in the firsts two books I didn't like him a lot.

Agreed. I think in the first two books we didn't see him for himself, but by the other characters. In the last three books, was very interesting see his thoughts and actions by himself.

P.S.: I forgot to mention Sam. I really like him and his love for books.

I found this group as I was searching for one just like it as I've recently purchased AGoT and was hoping there'd be a group somewhere which I could participate with analysis and discussions !! I've watched the TV series but never read the books. so far I am absolutely Hooked by martin's writing and am probably going to end up speeding ahead a bit !!

I'm like all of you who said you didn't care for Theon much in the first two books. I actually quite hated him in book 2, but my opinion of him changes drastically by the end of book 5, which is quite impressive. (The other character who does this for me is Jaime Lannister. I HATED the dude in the beginning, and now I love him).

Vicki I had a similar experience, I hated Jaime and now he is one of my favourite character of the saga. How he grows throughout the books, it's amazing. He fascinates me.
