What are some good books on Shamanism? As an animist witch, Shamanism has always interested me but I don't know which books are any good. Any thoughts?

I like alchamical healing by Nikki scully. Do you plan to focus on one specific healing method or multiple

Leo Rutherford wrote a good overview of several shamanic traditions called (surprisingly) Principles of Shamanism. I loaned it to my Mom when she asked the same question. For a Native American perspective, The Shaman and the Medicine Wheel, by Evelyn Eaton is deeply informed, but I didn't find it as easy to read.

You might try Christopher Penczak's Temple of Shamanic Witchcraft. I also have a bibliography somewhere that I got from my Shamanic teacher. If I can find it, I'll post a few more from his list of suggested readings.

My favorite books on Shamanism include Eliade's grand text called: Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy as well as Michael Harner's The Way of the Shaman.I have also read a couple of really good books on Siberian shamanism that I can highly recommend, written by Olga Kharitidi; The first is Entering the Circle. The second is The Master of Lucid Dreams. And anything by Sandra Ingerman is great. I trained with her and she is a phenomenal shaman!

I've been reading a couple of books on Psychology and Shamanism lately. I'm working on my Bachelors in Psychology and want to add the spiritual aspect back into counseling. I was highly amused at the similarities of shamanism, so I started looking for books on it.

Just finished Journeying this evening. Enjoyable read as it did a decent overview of describing shamanism (based more on Harner's Core Shamanism) and psychology separately and then comparing the two. Very broad overview and stuck mostly with the journeying and spirit animals, and the support one gets from them and "safe" area to help a client heal themselves, essentially.

Chris penzacks book is very good. Micheal Hearner and Jonathan Howitiz are also supposed to be good. I did a shamanic workshop with Joanthan many years ago and it was amazing

Yes. I agree. I am also planning to expand my professional career in mental health and want to offer more than the traditional western model

Kendra, that is a great list of books to read on shamanism. I've read many of them, and have taken classes with Nan Moss and her partner David Corbin. I'd add a different Holger Kalweit book, "Dreamtime and Inner Space: The World of the Shaman". I'd also include a book called "The Quest for the Shaman" by Miranda and Stephen Aldhouse-Green. The latter can be a bit pricey. Tom Cowan also has a book called "Shamanism As A Spiritual Practice for Daily Life", which is more of a "how-to" for a solo practitioner. It's hard sometimes to know just where to begin, though one wouldn't go wrong with Michael Harner. I also liked the Roger Walsh book a great deal.
