Peter Leavell's book West for the Black Hills is an example of a book that has some fun appearances by Teddy Roosevelt which is done very well.

I got West for the Black Hills for my husband and he loved it so much that he finished it in one afternoon! It made a quick leap up in my TBR list after that.

Check out Nancy Moser and her Ladies of History series. I also really enjoy Tosca Lee, Tasha Alexander and Stephanie Landsem.
